As soon as he was released, Nic was back on the racing circuit with us, his legs stretched out straight in front of him and plastered up to the groin. If you’re a Hamilton fan or even a Formula 1 fan I would recommend this as a light read with a few chuckles here and there. However, living such an exciting life and in an environment where you have to win because everything else is a failure. I felt proud of the way the team had come through a sometimes stormy, controversial year and I felt proud, too, of my family and all my friends and supporters who had helped me to get where I was, so close to the title in my first season.

The whole journey for me, from my earliest days as part of the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz family to Formula One, has been quite emotional.I wouldn’t recommend it to the average reader since it’s more focused on his first year in F1 than an autobiography but as a fan, it was great to get an inside look into how Lewis was experiencing things at the time. In his book he gives the real version of events at a motor sport dinner where, as a nine-year-old wearing a borrowed suit, he approached McLaren team boss Ron Dennis with the immortal words that were to change his life forever. At an early age, Lewis narrates his humble beginnings, the people who supported him all the way and his first year as an F1 driver. While this is a great start for Lewis - the book was more of his super memory and his perspective but it was uninspiring and not captivating the reader by any means. There was, as a whole, very little personal reflection in this book, possibly as Lewis was still only 23 when he wrote this and to an extent didn't have to graft and over analyse his choices as his career had been largely shaped for him to this point.

I liked the book back then as it gives us a glimpse into where Lewis came from and like the title says, his story. Sometimes, if you are not feeling right, if you do not have the right energy levels, it can be impossible.I remember when Nic was four he had to have an operation on his legs to extend the tendons so as to increase his mobility. Few 22-year-olds have achieved enough to warrant 290 pages of reminiscence, but Hamilton is the exeption. One of the most interesting parts of this season was the inter team battle with Fernando Alonso and the spygate saga so to read about that is good.
