On Gonna Find What’s Killing Me, Jones then takes centre stage for a stripped-back, acoustic-led track that comes fully alive when the pair join to make something hauntingly beautiful. Quite a few decades ago, Fleetwood Mac proved that coming up with sophisticated pop is a specific art in itself where the artist(s) has to abide by the strict rules and formulas of a pop song while at the same time including elements that both abide by and neglect these formulas and limitations, while still coming up with something the audiences will love.

Taking in elements of country, rock, folk, soul and Americana, Far From Saints’ debut album is an indelible set of ten expertly crafted songs that touch on themes of love, perseverance, self-doubt and self-healing. Delicate acoustic guitar again dominates “Faded Black Tattoo” before a darker mood is set out on “Take It Through The Night”, which sees Lynn given a more prominent role on vocals. Inspirational lyrics are a theme throughout the album, with Lynn defiantly encouraging, “Don’t give up without a fight”, on the song, which seems destined to be a favourite for live performances.

Clearly, at ease with each other, it remains to be seen where the three artists go next, but their first offering certainly feels like it could be a springboard to bigger things. It has a classic rock edge to it and is sure to go down a treat with a festival crowd stomping along. Jack Penate delivers one of the strongest guest vocals, floating gracefully over the hands-in-the-air celebration of No Time.

As is often the case across this LP, it’s when the duo come together that they take what is already impressive and make it into something irresistible.In 2022, following an eight-year live hiatus, Hard-Fi advised that they would play a handful of dates, including a gig at the Kentish Town Forum in London. There's a fresh, virtuosic innocence to her pianism that perfectly suits the inventive simplicity of Mozart’s Variations on “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman” (better known to us as “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”), the inoffensive whimsy of Dohnányi’s concerto-style diversions on the same theme (Variations on a Nursery Song), the picture book sketches of Debussy’s Children’s Corner, and the deliciously crafted sentimentality of Schumann’s Kinderszenen.
