That is not criticism. The game competently executes its premise. If you want a one-book RPG that gives you the feel of old-school, insanely-lethal classic WFRP, Zweihander has you covered. Simply put, it is to Warhammer classic what games like Dungeon Crawl Classics are to early Dungeons & Dragons. There’s also a “fortune pool” for players to re-roll dice, and a “misfortune pool,” for the dungeon master to do the same. These things I generally like. If players can embrace this – along with the fairly solid chance that their current character gets decapitated within the week – the unexpected combinations the dice throw up can lead to some truly special roleplaying moments. However, a sizable slice of the roleplaying population is going to struggle to enjoy playing a character that simply doesn’t appeal to them at first glance. I like games better when the group glazes over details that are non-important to the game’s actual story – what I’m there to engage with in the first place. The best part though? Remember how I said Zweihander involves a lot of ethics and internal struggle? It turns out there is a very specific penalty for witnessing an ally’s unexpected death. In this case, each player got 6 corruption and the equivalent of two levels of exhaustion. The more corruption you have, the higher the chance is that you get a chaos rank at the end of the session, and it peaks at 10. As for a chaos rank, well... that’s what leads to things like insanity and substance abuse. ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer and grittier version of classic tabletop role-playing games you may already familiar with. The community calls this style of gaming the pathetic aesthetic, but we simply call it grim & perilous gaming. Monty Haul: Averted. Unless your party has a skilled rune-smith with a lot of Wyrdstone, the only magic items around are legendary relics like the Hammer of the God-Emperor - items that aren't going to be lying around in a dungeon. This is another distinctive aspect of Zweihänder – its overwhelming love for random tables. There are tables for hit locations, injuries and magical mishaps, but nowhere is this this love more apparent than during character creation. If you follow the rules as they’re written, you’ll randomly roll up everything from your character’s starting profession to their eye colour – the impact that blind chance can have is immense.

Needless to say, I very opposed to this provision and view as unnecessary for any program except those that are focused on sharing setting IP like Traveller's Third Imperium or WoTC's Forgotten Realms. The game is all about promoting roleplaying, as the designers feel that the act of roleplaying gets lost in many other tabletop RPGs. I agree with that sentiment. And all three of these will go and grab themselves humanoid women (not just human or elf - dwarf, gnomes and halflings work too) to make into sex slaves for reproduction. And the Orx don't even need to, they mainly reproduce by putting spores in corpses and they hate their halfbreed offspring Booguns - the sex slave part is just them asserting dominance.
