The album has been a labour of love spanning nearly a decade with the origins of KAYTRAMINÉ trace back to 2014, when Aminé unveiled "Not At All," an unofficial remix of KAYTRANADA's 2013 track "At All. Especially after seeing the creative album cover, I was hopeful that it would be just as good as I wanted it to be. Considering Aminé and Kaytranada’s history (and the marketing around the album) I was expecting an album for summer dance parties, full of high-energy songs. Cleverly titled Kaytraminé, the LP is set to make landfall next Friday (May 19) and their first single, “4EVA,” debuted back in April. But, honestly, considering K and A are both LA-based artists who get the party scene here, setting the tone for this function-bound project with a sample of Diddy saying, “I’m not with none of that standing around looking cool and shit/I want y’all motherfuckers to jump the fuck up” thrills the New Yorker in me.In terms of guest features, Kaytraminé will house assists from Freddie Gibbs, Pharrell Williams, Big Sean, Amaarae, and Snoop Dogg across 11 tracks. The two artists have formed a strong friendship over the years, and it’s finally led to a joint project that will be released to the public on May 19, 2023. The two blessed our ears with a playful, summer-appropriate anthem last month in “4EVA” which featured production assistance from Pharrell, and they released its music video and performed it for the first time live during Kaytranada‘s dance-y set for weekend one of Coachella. Prior to that was Limbo in 2020, a 14-song offering with special appearances from names like Summer Walker, Injury Reserve, slowthai, Vince Staples, Charlie Wilson, and Young Thug.

Aminé’s oral (sex) fixation gets old fast, and a few lines are groan-worthy enough to distract from the fun (“Just popped an X bitch I feel like I’m Malcolm,” he raps on “Who He Iz”). His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm. As a producer, Kaytranada is a svengali of samples, stacking tracks like building blocks to craft fresh beats with a vintage feel. Kaytranada, I ain’t really plan on this/I stand on this, ten toes in the dirt/Half a century”; soft flex on all fronts.Ecleen Luzmila Caraballo:It’s a three-way tie between the excellent album-opener “Who He Iz,” the sultry, Amaarae-assisted track “Sossaup,” and obvious standout of a single “4EVA” with Pharrell. If you’d like to hear a cerebral wordsmith rhyming over Kaytra beats, you’re better off seeking out his collaborations with Wiki or Mach-Hommy.

Ecleen Luzmila Caraballo: If I had to pick one, it’d be “UGH UGH;” clocking in at 4 minutes and 10 seconds, it’s the longest track on the project and I blame my skittish brain for getting the urge to skip halfway through.
