My Book Notes

Mrs. Tittlemouse first appeared in Potter's The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies. An animated adaptation of the story was featured on the BBC television anthology series, The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends in 1992. Mrs Tittlemouse is a terribly tidy little wood mouse. She is always sweeping her burrow, polishing and tidying. It is an endless job and it seems that no sooner has she made a good start than another messy visitor appears to leave their muddy footprints everywhere. Also, given the popularity of the Beatrix Potter coins, the coin is still highly sought after. The 2018 Mrs Tittlemouse 50p can still be found in your change and as collectors are adding them to their collections, the coin is becoming more scarce. Mrs. Tittlemouse sends the uninvited ladybird off with a variant of the traditional nursery rhyme Ladybird Ladybird: "Your house is on fire, Mother Ladybird! Fly away home to your children!". She then runs into a spider who asks her: "Beg pardon, is this not Miss Muffet's?", a reference to the nursery rhyme Little Miss Muffet. Mrs. Tittlemouse followed him with a dish-cloth, to wipe his large wet footmarks off the parlour floor.

The 2018 Mrs Tittlemouse 50p coin was released in 2018 and is one of the fifteen coins minted in the Beatrix Potter 50p series between 2016 and 2020. The Reverse image is designed by Emma Noble. Emma Noble had designed the 2015 coins to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter. When the Royal Mint issued additional Beatrix Potter coins in 2016, Emma Noble was again chosen to design them. Her designs were once again seen on 2017 and 2018 coins, including the Mrs Tittlemouse coin. Along one of her passageways she runs into Babbitty Bumble, a bumblebee, and in a storeroom she comes across a nest of four more bees, whom she is unable to remove.
