In the day flash setting you'll get 45hrs out of the light. That's easily enough for all the riding I can do for nearly a month. It's perfect for training rides when the sun never really comes up. Moon has judged the length of the cable well – it reaches from the hoods to the light while following the contours of the bar, so it'll sit nicely under the bar tape. Modes The memory function saves faff, although changing modes mid-ride is simplest with the included wired remote. Tidy folks could run the wire beneath their bar tape. Mounts The light itself is pretty robust. The front half of the body is made from aluminium, which easily resists being dropped onto the road without issue. I would like to see a better warranty though: one year for workmanship or material defects and a mere 120 days for the battery doesn't seem long enough to me. The rubber shims for fine-tuning the bar fit don’t have any grooves, so tend to splay outwards as the clamp is tightened and look untidy, although this doesn’t affect clamp performance and the light proved to be very stable over rough terrain.

The awkward button is unfortunate, as it controls so many things with various durations of a press (both while on or off). Take the time learn these routines and familiarise yourself with the light indicators, though, and you really start to enjoy what it can offer. Charging In IO mode the light detects darkness and turns itself on – ideal for riding through heavily shaded areas or tunnels during the day, or if your commute starts in daylight and finishes in the dark or vice versa. It doesn't get fooled by artificial light either, so don't panic when you're cruising under streetlights. You press and hold the button for a few seconds to swap from steady to flash, and then you have another four flashing modes plus an SOS setting. Of course, there are plenty of lights available online for less money, but they won’t necessarily offer the same reliability or aftersales support as the trusted brands tested here.

The twin button setup doesn’t work logically and the matrix display isn’t easy to decipher when shifting between modes and using the VLS or IBF. It does display the remaining battery charge clearly, though. The Rigel has a wide beam spread with a long throw, which is great for fireroad blasting and high-speed, technical trails that aren’t too winding.
