The juice press is today regarded as a real design icon, and with its dramatic design language, it makes it cool as a decorative item in the kitchen. His precocious awareness of ecological implications, his enthusiasm for imagining new lifestyles, his determination to change the world, his love of ideas, his concern with defending the intelligence of usefulness – and the usefulness of intelligence – has taken him from iconic creation to iconic creation.

Sketched on the paper tablecloth of a restaurant during a tripto Italy, Juicy Salif's biomorphism is striking. Starck has publicly stated that his citrus reamer was "not meant to squeeze lemons" but "to start conversations".

In the fifties, he became managing director of the company, introducing a new international dimension, which he developed by working with external designers. I received a napkin from Starck, on it among some incomprehensible marks (tomato sauce, in all likelihood) there were some sketches. Alessi is now a B Corp, a company which strives to maximise the positive impact they have on their employees, the communities in which they operate and the environment, by using the business as a force for regeneration and sustainability.Designed in 1990, the design for the controversial kitchen utensil was sketched onto a pizzeria napkin by Stark whilst dining on holiday in Italy. Critics have suggested the juicer emphasizes form over function as it does not perform well in practice, but Starck has argued that although it does work as a lemon squeezer, it was actually made to start conversation. In conclusion, Alessi has established itself as a leading brand in the world of design, offering a unique blend of functionality, aesthetics, and innovation. Prior to my student placement at National Museums Scotland, this was not a word I would have ever applied to a lemon squeezer.

The Juicy Salif citrus squeezer , now described by its creator as a small allien who came to visit our homes is truly an iconic object. Immense popular and academic success, it is still one of Alessi's best-selling andpublished creations. Twenty five years on, the napkin is now in the Alessi Museum and housed within the permanent collection at MoMA, New York.Upon further inspection, I learnt that the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer is, in fact, one of Philippe Starck’s most influential designs and is still sold to this day. Philippe Starck, world famous creator with multifaceted inventiveness, is always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. Nothing cheap here, that’s for sure, but this is perfect for special treats, and there’s IKEA for the rest! Born in Granerolo, Verbania, in 1916, Carlo Alessi studied technical design at the OMAR institute in Novara. The Juicy Salif by Philippe Starck has become an absolute design classic that many of us have become familiar with.
