Safety advice when using emollients Fire safety AproDerm Emollient Cream is slightly richer than AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream, however, is still light and easily absorbed, whilst being cooling and moisturising. It can also be used as an effective soap substitute, to prevent the skin from drying out further. Emollients can be applied as often as you like to keep the skin well moisturised and in good condition. Ideally, this should be done at least 3 or 4 times a day. These medicines are appropriate for initiation in both primary and secondary care. Prescribing is appropriate within licensed or local recommendations. Contraindications: Patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient. Known sensitising ingredient: Lanolin

Remind patient of risks of spray formulation. Clothing and bedding with emollient products dried onto them can be easily ignited with a naked flame. Inadvertent spraying on floor surfaces could lead to slips. Emollients are used to hydrate the skin. Their effects are short lived and they should be applied frequently. To be effective, adequate quantities of emollients should be prescribed. Suitable quantities to prescribe: see Emollient Prescribing Guidelines These recommended amounts are for twice daily application for an adult. To keep the skin well hydrated, leave-on emollients should be applied in adequate amounts to sufficiently cover dry and inflamed areas. 500g = 1 tub or pump dispenser. Quantities required will vary with the size of the patient, the severity and extent of skin dryness. For children approximately half this amount is suitable. Amber medicines are considered suitable for GP prescribing following specialist initiation or recommendation. You may need to experiment with different emollients or try a combination. For example, you may decide to use a cream during the day and an ointment at night.
