I haven't read an author more inclined to have his characters suffer than Erikson. I mused in my review of the previous book in this series (The Deadhouse Gates), with all the starvation, rape, murder, and mass crucifixion that took place in the story, where does Erikson go from there? What does he do to increase the tension and deepen the depravity? It is strange to think – yet Erikson makes sure that you know it is true – that even though these characters are big in these books, and are important to the particular places they are in at that particular moment in time, they are but ants in a world that is far bigger than even we can imagine, and we’re reading the damn books!Due to the Dead: The fallen Bridgeburners are entombed in the ruins of Moon's Spawn when it is sent to die over the sea. It goes to show how much Anomander Rake and the other Tiste Andii came to respect them as comrades and friends. Well played, sir! But what now? There's seven or so more books. What's left? Holocaust denial and a sub-prime lending crisis? Well, I am just about done as to continue regaling about all the grim yet touching and inspiring storylines in this book will just be too much for a review. Suffice to say that even with the stupendous tale of the Chain of Dogs in Deadhouse Gates, Erikson successfully followed through with another superior instalment in Malazan Book of the Fallen. The climactic sequence in Memories of Ice was epic, relentless, emotionally powerful and tragic. Even though this was a reread, I was not insensate to the heartbreaks that Erikson seemed to love subjecting his readers to. It would have been so easy for Erikson so ignore that these three characters have any humanity at all, but he makes sure that you know they do.

The First Collected Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach (Collected Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach: Book 1) Of course my favorite character in MoI stays Captain Paran ❤ Struggling to accept a new role and fighting severe battles inside and outside himself he was a bit annoying sometimes, but always surprising and lovable, especially seeing his growth as a character step by step. Like a fanatical tide of corrupted blood, it seethes across the land, devouring all who fail to heed the Word of its elusive prophet, the Pannion Seer. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Dujek Onearm's Host and the Bridgeburners ­ each now outlawed by the Empress ­ alongside their enemies of old including the grim forces of Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, and his Tiste Andii, and the Rhivi people of the Plains. Second time around even better than the first!!! What was I thinking! This deserves to be rounded up to 5 stars!!! But the pain.... Just as painful and potent as the first time! Slave Mooks: The Tenescowri are a particularly horrifying example. The cannon fodder of the Pannion Domin, they aren't permitted any supplies from their superiors, restricting them solely to what they can loot from the enemy. As such, they're lightly armed but driven to the point of madness by near starvation and will charge headlong at the enemy against all odds in the hope of slaking their hunger by any means necessary. Though not very effective by most standards, they have the weight of numbers on their side and their presence on a battlefield is horrifying enough to do a real number on the enemy's morale (and their own morale is virtually unbreakable on account of how they have to literally engage the enemy constantly or die a slow, horrible death). It's telling about how hellish the Pannion Seer's rule is that people actually volunteer for the Tenescowri to escape what the Domin does to its civilian subjects.For your effort and patience, you will receive a writer’s greatest gift: An incredible, and what I consider to be an extremely satisfying ending that…Well, I’ll leave it at that. Again, no spoilers. As I’ve stated in the past, I’m certain that some of you will mark this as unhelpful. Oh well. I’m all about the journey, and what a journey this will be for you, dear Audible listener.

Overall, with the characters, Erikson’s character work has improved a huge amount from GotM, yet we did see a little of this in the characters from DG. I love all of these characters. Some of the other characters we meet include: Silverfox, Gruntle, Stonny, Korlat, and Itkovian. (Yes, there are a lot more, but give me a break! If you want a full list, read the book!) Erikson enjoys working on his novels in public places. Memories of Ice was completed at Bar Italia in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Good characters turn evil and evil characters become good, and sometimes justice is not seen. Despite this, death is usually not the final word, as characters ascend, return, or are reborn.For me, with this book I believe I have finally gotten a grasp on what the series is. I wish someone had written it out like this to me earlier, so I could understand. Nevertheless, I will try and fill that role for those like me who come after. Last Stand: During the Siege of Capustan, Gruntle and his 'troops' (recruited from pissed off/scared citizens and routed soldiers) hold out on top of a multi-story apartment building until point where the building itself begins breaking apart from all of the bodies and blood bloating inside of it, and the Tenescowri become able to make a ramp of their dead to get to the top. As he exits the valley, he runs into Onos T'oolan who says he is waiting on someone, and that they are in the ruins of Morn. He tells Toc that two months have passed since Adjunct Lorn was killed, and that imperial efforts to take over Darujhistan have failed. Toc asks him to help him gather food, water, and supplies to repair his bow. Tool agrees, but before they can start, Lady Envy appears with two large dogs at her side, Garath and Baaljagg. Tool notices that Baaljagg is an Ay, an extinct species of wolf that once coexisted with the Imass. This strides too close a path to the Crippled God for it to be accidental, Rake. The Chained One's poison is that of Chaos, after all.' Lister's reading is once again solid. I will continue reading this series and would recommend it to a friend as long as that friend knew, that even though this is fantasy, not to expect any happy endings.

Mook Horror Show: The Seguleh send a "punitive army" of three warriors to punish the Pannion Domin for encroaching on their territory. Every fortress, village, and army they encounter is reduced to mince meat. Three Seguleh is probably two more than they needed to send, but never let it be said the Seguleh aren't thorough.
