It features the original ten-track set spread across the two sides of one disc, while a second record contains single A-sides and B-sides, and on the flip, five previously unreleased rough mixes, of “East Of Eden,” “Tall Ships Go,” “Where The Rose Is Sown,” “Come Back To Me,“ and “Bass Concerto. Devoted fans will be more than familiar with exquisite stand-alone single Wonderland, of course, and radio edits of Steeltown’s singles are only of value if you absolutely have to hear what they sounded like after some judicious but arbitrary pruning, but the remaining lost gems are well worth a listen, not least a respectful but shrewdly countrified version of Roxy Music’s Prairie Rose and the starry-eyed Springsteen shuffle of Winter Sky. The 4CD Deluxe Edition of Driving To Damascus includes the live-in-the-studio Nashville Sessions, single versions, alternate mixes from the US release ‘John Wayne’s Dream’ and two discs of demos. I can only compare it with my 1988 first release LP of Big Country's Peace in Our Time album, and that album sounds very good. We are thrilled to announce the 40th anniversary tour for our 1983 debut LP ‘The Crossing’ along with very special guests Spear of Destiny on selected dates.

Sharper and narrower in focus than The Crossing and lacking its remorseless romanticism, songs like thunderous singles East Of Eden and Where The Rose Is Sown showcased a newfound grit and soul that Adamson never really surpassed, with only the mesmerising haze of Come Back To Me and the twinkly hearted Girl With Grey Eyes straying from a righteous path of bombastic emoting and towering melodic oomph. Building new pedal board for Crossing tour, this is the closest sounding equipment I could find to replicate the sounds from the album. Whether replacing much-loved originals, or adding to a collection afresh, these are a superior way to enjoy such enduring and influential music.The band attributed Peters' departure to his inability to commit fully to Big Country, much of his time being devoted to The Alarm and solo projects. Big Country had backed Roger Daltrey on his 1985 solo album Under the Raging Moon, and Tony Butler played bass and provided backing vocals on Pete Townshend's 1980 hit single "Let My Love Open the Door" and the Pretenders' 1982 hit single " Back On The Chain Gang". Since then the band has continued with only two of the original members (Watson and Brzezicki) and Simon Hough on vocals. Always the O2 causes problems as it is with the way it deals out it's tickets only hours before a show. While the status of Hough's membership was not immediately clarified, in a March 2014 podcast, Bruce Watson confirmed that Hough was now the band's fifth member.

Big Country comprised Stuart Adamson (formerly of Skids, vocals/guitar/ keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar/ mandolin/ sitar/ vocals), Tony Butler ( bass guitar/vocals) and Mark Brzezicki ( drums/ percussion/vocals). With the involvement of Forbes, later in 2012 and into 2013, the group recorded a new album in the Welsh town of Wrexham.

This line-up began more regular touring as well as writing new material for potential release, in part with the involvement of record producer Steve Lillywhite. The band's music incorporated Scottish folk and martial music styles, and the band engineered their guitar-driven sound to evoke the sound of bagpipes, fiddles, and other traditional folk instruments. Throughout 1984 and 1985 the band toured the UK, Europe, and to a lesser extent the US both as headliners and in support of such bigger-name artists as Queen and Roger Daltrey. Big Country broke massively worldwide with the release of the album’s classic singles ‘Fields Of Fire�.

With the exception of The Great Divide, a song with verses that sound like bits of other, better BC songs glued together, this is a wonderfully coherent and emotionally potent collection of windswept anthems.Titled The Journey, the album was released through Cherry Red Records in April 2013, becoming the group's first studio record since 1999. Adamson said publicly that he was pleased with the album but disappointed that it did not fare better on the charts. The bright-eyed thump of Tall Ships Go and the rolling grooves of Rain Dance have stood the test of time well, but it’s the closing Just A Shadow that most vigorously proclaims Adamson’s gentle brilliance, with lines like ‘Why are faces filled with anger/that should only shine with youth’ ringing as true today as three decades ago. I don’t think this sounds as good as the original vinyl release but its nice to have the B sides on one disk as well as the other odds and ends.
