I think this is a very good book and it deserves 5 stars, which I have drawn here (because it meant I could stay on the iPad for longer.

His young adult book The Graveyard Book(2008) won both the Newbery Medal and the Carnegie Medal, making him the first author to win both awards for the same book. Both the father and the son get to tell the story, at the same time sometimes, and neither of them have names, other than their roles in the story. And occasionally they have requests for ponies or "handsome, misunderstood wumpires" to be in the story. The audiobook's narration was made by Neil Gaiman and I thought that this was extremely well done and amused. And my daughter, Maddie, when she read Fortunately, the Milk recently, said that when she got to the end, all she could think was that it sounded exactly like me.Milk, despite its much lighter tone, taps into the themes of these novels, traveling to worlds with other beings and the threat of being held captive there. It seems forced and quickly told, like Neil was at a party telling this story and someone wrote it down and published it without any real editorial input.

The story is also peopled with an eighteenth century pirate crew who don't know what a plank is, ruthless wupmires and a nimble dinosaur inventor who owns a time machine. at the end of May in New York City, Neil Gaiman gave a talk provocatively titled "Why Fiction Is Dangerous. For all the mad-cappery, there's a fair bit of attention here to an internally consistent time-travel story, with all the fun that implies. BUT,’ she said, ‘Don’t think you’re going to be lazing around watching TV and playing on the computer all day.
