Battery life isn’t not bad, either. The Vero has a 48Wh battery and this kept the lights on for just a shade longer than nine and a half hours in our video rundown benchmark. For the record, the battery rundown test was conducted in Eco mode while the performance tests were all run in Performance mode. This panel with a brightness of 250 nits, is a little dimmer than I would have liked and falls below the usual 300 nit target by just a tad. The Kensington 512GB SSD meanwhile proved to be a somewhat mediocre performer, recording sequential read and write speeds of 2,275MB/sec and 1,134MB/sec respectively.

The first graphics benchmark we run is the 3DMark benchmark, a graphics test suite for Windows that contains several subtests for different GPU functions and software APIs. We queue up two DirectX 12 tests in particular: 3DMark Night Raid and 3DMark Time Spy. (Note: We were unable to run the 3DMark tests on the XPG Xenia 14, so those results are absent.)Used for the laptop bag and keyboard sheet. The webcam is disappointing – just another rather shoddy 720p affair that deserves no further words wasted on it. The Aspire Vero feels solid enough that while I didn’t drop it onto the ground during my review, I got the impression that it could take the rigors of daily use in stride. It measures 0.7 by 14.3 by 9.4 inches (HWD), a fairly standard measurement for 15-inch laptops, and weighs 3.9 pounds. While 15-inch laptops aren’t always the lightest options, one under 4 pounds is worth noting. Of course, lighter and thinner profiles do exist—take the Editors' Choice-award winning 15-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop 4, for example.

No product or component can be absolutely secure. Aspire Vero 15 (AV15-53P) is composed of 40% PCR material, while Aspire Vero 14 (AV14-52P) consists of 30% PCR material. A 512GB SSD offers up a decent bit of capacity for storing all your files and programs, and isn’t as stingy as some other laptops. But this is the max capacity currently available on the Vero, which may not suit everyone. Just like the keyboard, the Aspire Vero’s 15.6-inch IPS full HD (1,920 by 1,080 pixels) display is standard fare. It uses Acer ComfyView, an anti-glare matte display that reduces light reflection for a more comfortable viewing experience. In practice, it works, and we didn’t find an angle that ruined our viewing experience. There’s no touch capability to the screen, but that’s not much of a deal breaker on a desktop-replacement machine.

A Greener Machine

It’s a shame there isn’t a synonym for irritating that starts with RE because that’s what this feature is. My eye kept being drawn to the R and E key graphics, which momentarily interrupted my thought processes. Prolonged exposure may result in familiarisation but messing about with keyboard icons, no matter how well-intentioned, is a bad idea in my opinion. x USB Type-C™ port USB supporting : (Thunderbolt 4/USB 3.2 Gen 2/USB charging 5 V; 3 A/DC-in port 20 V; 65 W) And, even ignoring the environmental considerations, the Vero is a rather good laptop. I like the looks and, apart from the slightly weak display it does its intended job well. Performance from the Intel Core i7-1195G7 processor is impressive for the price and the speaker system performs very creditably.

The final stretch of our testing involves the laptop's display and its battery life. To test the battery, we charge up the battery to 100% and then play a locally stored copy of the open-source Blender movie Tears of Steel on a loop at 50% brightness and at 100% volume, along with a few other battery-testing tweaks to ensure consistent and fair settings across all tested devices. Last but not least, the final trial is the display brightness and color measurements. Using Datacolor's SpyderX Elite calibrator and its software tools, we measure display performance, screen-brightness output levels, and gamut settings for the three most relevant color spaces for laptop users: the sRGB, Adobe RGB, and DCI-P3 standards.Speakers, located under the laptop, are full and clear, even at maximum volume. Acer's TrueHarmony technology employs high-quality magnets in its speakers to produce a high magnetic flux, which is then divided between speakers and results in more realistic sound reproduction. This means your audio will be louder and clearer at higher volumes.

The Acer Aspire Vero is one of the slowest of the bunch, trailing the HP Pavilion Aero, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4, and the VAIO SX14. That was also true during the Cinebench R23 benchmark, another multi-core test meant to exercise all of a processor's cores and threads. The i7-1195G7’s four cores and eight threads produced average results. The touchpad is generously sized at 5.1 x 3.2 inches, and features a nice tactile feel, support for Windows gestures, and a handy fingerprint reader in the top-left corner. Don’t get me wrong, the plastic surface will never quite match up to the use of glass in certain touchpads, but what we have is perfectly serviceable. Acer Aspire Vero: PerformanceThe speakers on offer sound nicely balanced with a little bit of low-end punch. They are downwards firing though, so do note that sound could be a little muffled if you place the Acer Aspire Vero on a softer surface, such as blanket or a bed.
