A Gothic period piece told across two timelines, the book explores similar themes to her other novels—family, trauma, and questions of science versus faith—but manages to still somehow feel like nothing we’ve read from her before. There is an ancient stone castle there that houses the likes of a handful of young girls and the limping old man known as "Uncle". The youngest members of the family dread these punishments, but Nora, who has been there the longest, believes in Uncle’s teachings and everything he asks them to do. When things reach a bloody climax, Eve and Dinah’s accounts of that night contradict but only one woman can be telling the truth.

There are even darker elements that could be triggers for some readers, like miscarriage, suicide and rape, so do be aware.There are shades of Shirley Jackson here, and shades of THE LONEY; my only (small) complaint is that, as in RAWBLOOD, the reader is given no inkling of which actual religion or cult we're dealing with - I'm sure this is intentional, to avoid upsetting genuine pagans (or Christians, or believers, or cultists of one kind of another) who may not approve of the way in which the ritualistic family environment is depicted, but to sidestep any mention of religion in a story about toxic cultism seems to me a weakness, a hole in the heart of the story. It is maddening to read a book where the characters are exhibiting harmful, destructive, unnatural behavior because they're in a cult but there aren't enough details given to satisfy the reader's curiosity or disbelief. This book won the Shirley Jackson award upon its original UK release in 2018, and I have no doubt the honor is deserved.

Look no further than the brutality in last year’s Sundial or the downright gut-wrenching imagery in her magnum opus, The Last House on Needless Street. The cult vibes in this one were really creepy and well done, I am 100% with you regarding the atmosphere! There are plenty of readers who have devoured this one and have appreciated Ward's craft in this particular story. Catriona's writing is a force of gothic creativity that you need to engage with - Little Eve has the feel of early Iain Banks.
