Hidden Pictures is one of those rare gems that's aware of the rules of the genre even as it breaks them and invents new ones. It’s a familiar story (nanny to a boy with strange powers) told in an unfamiliar way, and it will grip you.With its familiar “I Spy” structure and favorite friends from “Sesame Street,” this book is sure to be a hit with early readers. Yes, the images throughout were a nice touch and added a unique immersion to the story but overall, that wears off and you’re left with a weird, unrealistic story that ends frustratingly. Not only is this book painting the LUDICROUS idea that any trans child is being forced to be so by their *woke leftist* parents as legitimate, validating this hateful idea that erases the experiences of trans kids who have healthy and open relationships with their parents and are given the freedom to be themselves, but it's whipping up fear in its target demographic, giving them yet another reason to be openly transphobic.

Well, that's what the new nanny, Mallory, is dealing with when Teddy starts to draw pictures of his invisible friend, Anya. After a personal injury, Mallory unfortunately plummeted down a hole many Americans before her have suffered through; opioid addiction. I quite liked aspects of her character-- I was interested in her past and sympathised with her struggles to combat her drug addiction, and her narrative voice was easy to read and compelling --but she does and says some things that were just kinda stupid. The characters besides Mallory are boring and from the 50% point on, the story unravels and ends up a hot mess that doesn’t make any sense at all.If you love a good scary movie, plot twist, or heart-pounding thriller, then you have come to the right place. Additionally, Mallory feels like Teddy's imaginary friend, Anya, may be the missing woman in question and she clearly is trying to communicate with them. Teddy starts to become more introverted, he doesn’t like to mix with other children and he also begins to keep his drawings secret – but, mysteriously, they always seem to find their way into Mallory’s hands. Whip-smart, creepy as hell, and masterfully plotted, Hidden Pictures is the best new thriller novel I've read in years. Along the way the author threw in a kitchen sink full of social issues, and not-as-subtle-as-he-thought political and religious jabs.

I would expect a Christian to believe in their God just as wholeheartedly as I, as an atheist, don't believe in any.

It’s brilliantly twisted in a way that I didn’t expect and I feel like Rekulak just literally led me down the garden path with his cunning and devious plot. But when the boy's wealthy parents refuse to believe that a ghost could be possessing their son, Mallory attempts to communicate with an entity she blithely assumes to be benign. I really enjoyed this one and as with mysteries that I can't figure out, I try to have multiple wild guesses.
