Sharpness was sometimes an issue at extreme magnifications, but not due to the sharpness of the lens – instead, it was due to the depth of field. At high magnifications, depth of field is always an issue because it’s inherently narrow. You’ll need to stop down to apertures like f/8, f/11, and f/16, which have increasingly more issues with diffraction. The lenstip test actually shows a minor difference. Peak resolution without the TC is 76 lpmm, so 38 lpmm after a 2x crop vs 43 lpmm achieved with the 2x TC. But that is on a 16MP body and ignores the 1.4x. I even stated it wasn’t necessarily for myself and a specialist application. That doesn’t mean I cannot see the advantage. Yes you can make great images with shorter focal, I never said you couldn’t. I have only implied that choice is good and this choice is not available on FF. It’s available on MFT due to the inherent benefits of a crop sensor.The f3.5 isn’t going to make this lens handle double-duty for portrait work. But, macro work typically requires a narrower aperture because getting in close reduces the depth of field to oblivion. So for macro shooters, I don’t think the f3.5 will be a deal-breaker. The 90mm probably is a great lens. The marketing around the TC is what is questionable. Not that is a capable macro lens

I have seen a couple of reviewers comment that it is a shame that the lens was released in the winter in North America. We will have our lenses in March when the flowers start popping up and the insects come out, so it is perfect timing. And for us ambassadors that were trying out the lens in the colder months we just needed to get a little more creative and find some flowering trees, visit a magical butterfly conservancy, find some colorful frogs, etc. Even combined with a pro-level body such as the OM-1, it’s a relatively light weight combination for carrying around all day. It balances quite well with those larger Micro Four Thirds bodies, such as the Olympus OM-1 we have been using it with for the purposes of this review. You might find if you have smaller Micro Four Thirds bodies it’s a little bit front heavy, so that’s perhaps worth considering.Ross the Fiddler: That's never a good argument. We live in an informed world (even if the camera world will be less well informed when dpreview is switched off). Your observation is possible because those who would be disappointed are not in that group, because they know they would be and therefore don't buy it in the first place. ;-)
