It was the same reaction I had when I read those other `notes' from that other 'sky, the man himself, Fyodor Dostoevsky.

My original review did not emphasize enough the amount of pain Bukowski probably brought into the world through his actions. As soon as he starts to get too close to these families or hosts he will leave without notice and go on to find a new place to stay. What I enjoyed the most about this book was the ending and not just because I could finally put the book down for good, but because of its optimism.Peopled by Kerouac, Burroughs and other much less salubrious characters, his exploits provoke humour and despair, whilst highlighting the inherent beauty and futility of life. This is the first of his books that I've read and I catch myself thinking that I really don't hope the rest of his book are the same. His first book of poetry was published in 1959; he went on to publish more than forty-five books of poetry and prose, including Pulp (1994), Screams from the Balcony (1993), and The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992).

Just wondering if someone else could provide me with an alternative perspective and perhaps make me appreciate it more. Bukowski published his first story when he was twenty-four and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. Whether he is drinking while writing his stories and poetry, or showing up to work and meetings already drunk, every story incorporates his vigorous drinking habits. Oyy ok let’s get this wrapping up, I’m rambling which means I had a lot of thoughts and didn’t know how to frame them. I’m spoiled and used to sections and titles in short story collections now so we know how it’s organized, but this seems like total hodgepodge or possibly chronological by publication date.Which makes for a hilarious companion, where we tend to stick around near him and cannot wait to see what he will say or do next, but never want him to be anywhere near our children. Bukowski is often accused of stripping the good away from life but if you read closer you'll realize how much respect he has for life and how much joy it brings him.
