After I went through a brilliant comic monologue describing all the dogs I had seen that day ("This big, gray. Hundreds of years into the future, people discover a ranting book written by a disturbed present-day bigot, and model their lives around the ‘truths’ it contains. However, the creatures are sufficiently alien in Nu-London to be regarded as side-show freaks and the number of animals seems insufficient to support their sustained contribution to the local economy.

Over the course of a further five hundred years the book has become the central religious text for the Kingdom of Ing hunkering on the archipelago that climate change floods have made of central and southern England. However, that melt spanned around thirteen millennia (between 19,000 years ago and 6000 years ago) with an average rate of sea-level rise of one metre per century. There is some lovely writing and flashes of humour buried in the deciphered mockni, but notwithstanding the maps, this is not speculative fiction of either traditional fantasy or science-fiction.Electronic Boy is a wonderfully entertaining account of Dave Ball’s colourful life in music, told in his own words. The book is maybe a little longer than it needs to be, and maybe a little bit more confusing than it needs to be.

The prose in all Self texts is an unflinching tapestry of experimental wordplay, erudite phraseology and relentless poetic wonderment, woven with a stoical third-person narrative voice which is unafraid to diffuse the loftiness of his intention with a sprinkling of earthbound humour. It had some plucky parts and made me chuckle a few times, mainly with outlandish dialogue, however evaluating the book as a whole left me with very little passion one way or another.Having taken a career break from secondary schooling to further my own education with some post graduate study I’ve completed an MA in Creative Writing at Queen’s University Belfast. After a decade as Conservative Party leader and six years as Prime Minister, he remains an enigma to those outside his exclusive inner circle.
