The book is written in the first person, and rather colloquially to be a convincing teen narrative, but still with formality. Once the book reaches the present day and the author's attempt to explore the world through the flavors of its butter it definitely loses me.

It includes two novella-length works and short stories that are diverse in every meaningful way possible. Many books for young adults are written with the intention of increasing suicide awareness and how the victim might feel, and although Erin Lange definitely covers how Butter feels, she also looks at how he could affect his family, friends, and how it might be too easy to blame anyone but yourself. I've been dying to read this book ever since I saw it recommended to me on Goodreads a few months ago.

Lively, detailed without being overly technical, and written by a trained chef and dietitian, this would be a great World of Food book. This is an inventive, at times painful and at times funny and sweet story about a bullied boy fighting back. I so badly wanted Butter to live; his reasons and mine for suicidal thoughts are vastly different, but I met a fellow traveler on the same road. Butter sculpting is carried out as far apart as Tibet and Iowa, as the photos show, while hand wooden tools like dash churns and paddles are also pictured along with giant stainless steel industrial production.
