However, SEGA Superstars Tennis was never released on PC. Sega Superstars Tennis is a tennis game by Sumo Digital released for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS and Mac. It seems his recent athletic clash with Mario has rubbed off on Sonic: here he is with fifteen friends in a brightly coloured, special move-filled variation on good old lawn tennis, not unlike the plumber’s N64, Game Boy Advance and Gamecube outings, on the surface at least. This isn’t a simple formula rip, however: this is pure Sega through and through, from the blue skies to the vibrant Richard Jacques theme, but will it appeal to those whose Sega knowledge starts and ends with a hedgehog? Thing is, I don't hate it either. In fact, the Wii remote controls work pretty well, the selection of characters and courts is sure to please most SEGA fans, and while the volleys aren't nearly as deep or as strategic as they are in Virtua Tennis, they can still be enjoyable, particularly with multiple human players. Sega Superstars Tennis is the only game featuring Sonic on the PlayStation 2 that prompts the player if they would like to activate progressive scan without the need to hold down a button combination— Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sonic Riders, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and Sonic Unleashed all require the player to hold down and during start-up to bring up the prompt, and Sega Genesis Collection requires the player to access the Options menu to enable it. You can go through an entire season with your favorite team or test out the franchise mode and create a dynasty. You may even make your teams and players in this game.

There are several playable minigames in Sega Superstars Tennis, including ones from Sega games such as a House of the Dead meets Space Invaders game, in which the player has to hit moving targets in the form of zombies, a Space Harrier game, a Puyo Puyo game, and a Virtua Cop game. Likewise, returning serves and keeping rallies going doesn't appear to let you stretch for shots in quite the same way as VT does. Whereas you might reasonably expect your man (slash monkey, slash hedgehog, etc) to stretch and dive to meet the ball, time after time we found ourselves punished for shots that would be considered routine in VT. Whether that's a set-in-stone gameplay decision or something being tweaked and balanced in the final stages of development was hard to say. Right now, though, SEGA Superstar Tennis definitely doesn't feel like Virtua Tennis with SEGA icons instead of grizzled professionals. In addition to characters from the Sonic universe, you’ll also get a chance to play as such characters as NiGHTS, AiAi from Super Monkey Ball, Ulala from Space Channel 5, Amigo from Samba De Amigo and Beat from Jet Grind Radio.Holding aloft its new baby, SEGA proudly stormed the gates of EG towers (we do have towers now - did you see the press release?) to give us a hands-on with a near-complete 360 build of the game, currently looking good for a mid-March release on about 97 platforms.
