(Image credit: Steve May/Techradar) Samsung HW-Q700B review: Design No matter how you get your audio on board, though, it’s delivered to you by a complement of six drivers in the soundbar plus another in the subwoofer. Facing out from the front of the soundbar in a ‘left/right’ arrangement there are four 57mm (fairly) full-range drivers, two at either end – each pair is reinforced by what Majority calls an ‘airport’ but what looks to me very much like a bass reflex port. The handover between the two is achieved without alarms, and while the sub doesn’t have the variation or detail levels of the soundbar, it’s not quite as blunt an instrument as some alternatives. The bass stuff may not be the most varied, but it hits with determination and it’s controlled pretty well. Certainly the Majority doesn’t default to the droning some rival designs indulge in.

The Samsung HW-700B is a great all-rounder entertainer. It’s able to deliver crisp dialogue (which has long been a strong point of Samsung’s better bars), but can slam hard when the action demands it. It can also cut a rug with streamed Bluetooth music. The Q700B is positioned below Samsung’s HW-Q800B model, which adds side-firing drivers for a 5.1.2 listening experience. Design At this sort of money, the HDMI pass-throughs are a fairly unusual and very welcome provision – certainly they’ll keep the number of connections to your TV down to a minimum. HDMI ARC, meanwhile, is good for dealing with the lossy form of Dolby Atmos that’s used by the likes of Disney Plus and Netflix– but owners of the best 4K Blu-ray players won’t be able to access the lossless version their machines deal in. That requires an HDMI eARC input. There's also no DTS support. Majority suggests there’s a total of 400 watts of Class D power doing the amplification business – there’s no indication of how that total is divided, though.

The Q700B doesn’t have a detailed status display or onscreen interface. Instead it communicates via a front-facing LED display that’s designed to be read through the perforated grille. This is fine if you’re sitting face-on, but it becomes less legible when viewed from the side. There’s also limited on-body controls for volume, source selection and power. New to Samsung’s 700-series soundbars this year are dedicated up-firing drivers for the height channel. These wideband tweeters are a big improvement on the Acoustic Beam technology used on last year’s 700-series model. That Acoustic Beam array conveyed nothing below 900Hz, while the tweeters deployed here are active from 350Hz. It’s well-built but fairly conventional in appearance, with a perforated grille that partially obscures the LED status display. There’s no on-screen GUI. The Q700B soundbar also supports Tap Sound. If you own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, you can simply touch the bar to make a Bluetooth connection using the SmartThings app.Inevitably, what you don’t get is a sense of front to rear movement, or side-fills. This is more a consequence of the soundbar form factor than anything else. For full surround sound, you can’t beat actual physical speakers placed at the rear of a room. This soundbar offers a variety of audio presets and sound modes, including Standard, Adaptive Sound, Surround and Game. For non-Atmos or DTS:X mixes, Adaptive proves the most consistently entertaining. Audio upscaling is well handled, particularly when it comes to sporting events. The movie’s opening nightclub scene features a thumping industrial beat, followed by a dramatic explosion. The soundstage is convincingly spacious; you sense the high ceilings and ambient space of the nightclub that Ryan Gosling finds himself in.

The bar offers a few on-body controls – for power, volume and source selection – but it ships with a simplified slimline remote control. A run through of The Gray Man on Netflix (Dolby Atmos) provides plenty of opportunities for the HW-Q700B to impress, as an example. Intelligibility is consistently good, without dialogue sounding overly sharp. There’s genuine heft to the presentation too.When it comes to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based audio the results are pleasingly immersive, although the delivery is understandably front-heavy. However, there’s precise placement of effects around the screen, with a greater sense of dimensionality. Those seeking full envelopment can add the optional rear speakers to create an immersive 7.1.4 channel system. audio immersion is good, to a point. The adoption of decent drivers for Atmos height channels warrants an unambiguous thumbs-up. Last year’s Acoustic Beam solution did the job, but on this model those dedicated drivers bring clear benefits when it comes to relating detail and creating presence. Audio upscaling of stereo and 5.1 sources is impressive too. Unlike a lot of products of this type and at this sort of money, the Majority’s remote control is quite robust and tactile, and it’s of a decent size, too. It lets you examine the four EQ presets, finesse bass and treble response, mute the system and so on. The partnering wireless subwoofer is relatively compact and decor friendly, with a fabric frontage, and port to the rear.
