The first time I read this book, I gave it four stars and was quite enamored with it. Upon a second reading, I found it to be a slower read than I remembered. I found that the cat was still my favorite character and had trouble feeling for the narrator (something I may have felt the first time around but not considered). I just couldn't stop reading, I felt like I knew both main characters, even though not many specific details are given about them. We don't know their full names, we don't know their age or so many other things. I think it is actually what makes them ring so realistic ! it feels like we all met on the side of the road, that we all rode in the old Volkswagen, looking for someone only the man knows, and even he doubts he has actually ever known his brother. the believability of the novel by reminding the reader of the predominantly Anglophone nature of today’s America. As well as underscoring the realism of the novel, the inclusion of other languages “ suppose une compétence de lecteur bilingue [ c], according to Simon [ 9], and suggests a greater theme: the affect of language on individuals and culture. With this period, the author explains, came a large group of French-speaking Quebecians who thought it wise to try to declare independence from the rest of Canada. As we know, this did not end up happening, but it plays a role in conflict in the story. The idea of secession from the country isn't the main problem in the story, rather, the main ideas that each person considers in times like that, like cultural unity and self-actualization. Volkswagen Blues was nominated for the Governor General's Award for French-language fiction at the 1984 Governor General's Awards and was one of the selected novels in the 2005 edition of Canada Reads, where it was championed by author and former National Librarian of Canada, Roch Carrier. Incredibly, the first metallic blue (L 35) appeared in March 1953, although it only lasted for around a year so it’s somewhat rare. Nonetheless, during the journey we can observe that Jacques and Pitsémine are not always certain that they are going in the right direction and often get lost. Furthermore, they are not totally sure of the goal of the journey and this is much the same of the journey of Quebec and the population who live in it. This uncertainty is reflected in Jacques as he does not necessarily understand the main reason as to why he is looking for Théo, who he has not spoken with for many years and is only a memory inside his head. It is possible that the author is trying to convey the message that Quebec is also uncertain of how it wants its journey to finish. Much of the population of the region at the time were calling for independence from Canada, however many people were also opposed to this, also a large number of people were calling for better integration of the ethnic groups of Quebec, again many people were against this as they wanted to protect the unique cultures.Gilberto Gil, who was also a key figure in the tropicalismo movement, uses powerful imagery and metaphors in the song to convey his message. The mention of the Volkswagen Beetle in the title serves as a symbol of both nostalgia and freedom. The car in the song represents a means of escape, a vehicle that can take us on a transformative journey, both physically and spiritually. What a refreshing story... Two characters, randomness, a quest... This book is so full of love, simple love, but also history, hurt, disappointment and anger, too. I just love this kind of books, because even though the story seems so peculiar and maybe, in a way, unrealistic, it really is about life, in the end. In the early ‘80s VW added Cornat Blue (LH5H), Medium Blue (LH5G), Tarpon (LE5Y) and Helios (LA5Y) as well as Regatta (LB5Y) and Lago (LE5B). Frost (LE5U) and Monaco (LA5D) came along in 1983, followed by Strato (LA5Z) a year later. Volkswagen Blues can indeed be considered a timeless classic. Its themes of freedom, self-discovery, and longing are universal and continue to resonate with listeners today, making it a song that transcends time. 10. We can deduce from the many aspects of the story, such as language and characters, that like much Québécois literature of this era, there are prominent political features and messages throughout the entire novel. The lyrics of Volkswagen Blues are poetic and thought-provoking, allowing listeners to interpret them in various ways. At its core, the song speaks about the longing for freedom and the need to break free from societal constraints. It reflects the desire to embark on a journey, both physically and metaphorically, in search of oneself and the meaning of life. The pastel Fjord Blue (L 434) was available from 1958, and Capri also made a re-appearance at about that time. The somewhat understated Slate Blue (L 361) was offered from 1959 alongside the equally sombre Indigo Blue (L 436). Gulf Blue (L 390) came along in 1960, and the popular and long lasting Sea Blue (L 360) followed from August 1963 until 1966 (below).
