The majority of Powers John's Lane 12 Year is aged in used bourbon casks, with a small contribution of distillate aged in used Oloroso sherry casks. It is somewhat similar to Redbreast 12 Year Irish Whiskey but it uses much less of the Sherry Cask component, is a higher proof and is non-chill filtered. To me this gives Powers John's Lane a richer taste and a more satisfying pour. During this period, when the Dublin whiskey distilleries were amongst the largest in the world, the family-run firms of John Power, along with John Jameson, William Jameson, and George Roe, (collectively known as the "Big Four") came to dominate the Irish distilling landscape, introducing several innovations. In 1886, John Power & Son began bottling their own whiskey, rather than following the practice customary at the time, of selling whiskey directly to merchants and bonders who would bottle it themselves. [9] They were the first Dublin distillery to do so, and one of the first in the world. [1] [2] A gold label adorned each bottle and it was from these that the whiskey got the name Powers Gold Label. In recent years, several single pot still variants have been relaunched under the Powers label. [1] History [ edit ] John's Lane Distillery, circa 1887. As the distillery grew, so too did the stature of the family. In 1841, John Power, grandson of the founder was awarded a baronetcy, a hereditary title. [6] In 1855, his son Sir James Power, laid the foundation stone for the O'Connell Monument, [3] and in 1859 became High Sheriff of Dublin. [7]

The popularity of Powers could be somewhat put down to its traditional pot still whiskeys; unlike other Pot Still Irish whiskey, Powers discards more top and tail of the second and third charges in the distilling process. What is known, though, is that the mash bill remains a secret, granting this a distinctive air and unique selling point. Heathkit sold electronic products such as radios, stereos, etc., that had to be assembled. I remember my Dad helping me put this together. Since soldering was required, solder smoke was present both in the air and in the mouth and it has a tendency to linger.
