In each of the four rounds of Modern Art, players will offer up paintings in turn and bid on their cards until one artist has had five pieces of art put up for sale. At this point, the round ends with the fifth work of art unsold and the Artists are then ranked according to the number of their paintings offered for auction this round. The three most popular are then allocated prices for their individual paintings, with players receiving thirty, twenty or ten dollars for their paintings respectively. Although simplistic, this feels thematic, with the “hottest” artists’ work being valued highest. Closed/Secret Auction: When this type of painting is auctioned, each player secretly bids the amount they are willing to pay in a closed fist. Once everyone has made their decision, everyone simultaneously reveals and the player with the highest bid wins. In the event of a tie, the player closest to the the auctioneer is the victor. Each player is dealt a hand of cards, which represent works of art that the player may offer for sale. Players then take turns putting these cards up for auction. There are several auction formats; the one used is determined by the card offered for sale. Entry to the collection is free for everyone. Booking is recommended for exhibitions. And to make money, you need to be able to figure out how much a painting will rank so that you don’t overbid. It’s difficult to do when everyone is trying to do the same thing. In each round players take turns to be the auctioneer, offering up one of the cards in their hand to the highest bidder. Everyone then bids using their secret stash of cash to win the auction, or abstain if they prefer, with the Auctioneer receiving the money from the winning player. The game continues like this over the four rounds and at the end, whoever reveals they have the most money is the winner. This means that while individual players have some control over their fate, ultimately it is the group who dictates which painters are valuable; so the game is as often about knowing when to hold on to paintings in your hand or when to sell them on the cheap to secure higher prices for later. And as with all Auction games, it is about playing the other players as well as the cards- trying to entice them into bidding wars on the works of art you offer for sale while scaring them off the pieces you want to keep for yourself… but not being too obvious about it! Players can make a lot of money for the paintings they put up for auction from their hand, but the real profit will be in ensuring the cards you won are worth something in the end. Anyways, the game. The game was not what I was expecting it to be. I think I already made that clear already. I don’t know why I thought it would be a condensed version of Modern Art, as it would essentially be the same game. And in that vein, what would be the point? What Modern Art the Card Game is, is a simple little market manipulation game. There are no bidding mechanisms in the game at all. A stark contrast to the Modern Art board game itself. The works of the artist who has sold most paintings in that round receives 30 points, second place receives 20 points, and third place receives ten points. The other two don’t score. My oldest daughter played clarinet and I got her a middle grade one so we didn't have to rent it. Of course, just after we got it she quits. This article needs additional citations for verification.
