As you know from my many posts featuring the works of children’s book author Mo Willems, we are huge fans. Even as my oldest children move on from picture books, there is a special place for his characters – The Pigeon, Gerald and Piggie. Even as an adult, I’m excited when a new book from the Pigeon series is released because it never fails to entertain me. This Berkshire Blanket inspired by Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! is so nice and ridiculously soft. The second method is probably my favourite though, for a truly magical effect. This way take a little bit more prep time and needs to be made a day in advance but I promise you, it’s worth it! To make your punch, pour equal parts lemonade and blue sports drink into your half gallon mason jar or large pitcher and add lemon lime soda to taste. Then simply pour your ice into your glasses (For different colour variations you can add some normal crushed ice above or below the blue ice), Pour some of the lemonade syrup into the bottom of each glass and top up with either ice-cold water or sparkling water and mix. Voila!

If you have leftover blue raspberry lemonade consider pouring it into ice trays and placing it in the freezer. The next time you make this drink, use your homemade ice cubes so that your drink doesn’t become watered down as they melt. When you’re ready to serve up your magic lemonade slushies, it’s time to crush your blue ice. To do this you can either use a food processor or, I have this nifty Ice crusher specifically for slushies because I’m slushie obsessed! (and I love to make slushies for events so need one!) Tip #2: If you are not getting the color you desire for your drink, simple add some food coloring! I like the Wilton food colors because they are vibrant! So I went on the hunt for other ways to recreate this classic and ended up with a healthy-ish version and a not so healthy version. Both are just as simple as the original, and just as delicious too! This simple magic colour-changing lemonade is made using butterfly pea flower and turns from blue to purple in front of your very eyes. This magical concoction is sure to impress kids and guest alike! Plus, it uses 100% natural colouring and less than 10 ingredients!And, you might be surprised to know that this isn’t the only ingredient that has this colour-changing effect. It was fascinating to see how rapidly the color changes to red as soon as I add the lemons – like a in a high school chemistry class but also frustrating because I didn’t get the blue lemonade I so desired :(. Next, we make the sugar syrup, but this is where the method differs slightly. When creating slushies I prefer to make my lemonade syrup as a whole, rather than a simple sugar syrup.

How to make simple colour-changing LemonadeWhat I love most about this recipe is that it uses a natural colourant and ‘natures magic’ science to get the colour-changing effect.
