In the year 2148, Earth's population is approximately 20 billion and its resources rapidly depleting, with pollution, famine, poverty, and war. Jake Sully, a 22 year old former marine paralyzed from the waist down due to wounds sustained in combat, is living in a small dilapidated apartment in a large city complex. He is forced live out his life in a wheelchair because veteran benefits are not enough to pay for a spine surgery, especially in his highly inflated economy. Earth is suffering from an energy crisis and the residents of Jake's city wear masks to combat its air pollution.
