And none of them ended the way I expected to them…they are filled with great twists that really keep you guessing the entire time as to where it is heading, no matter how long each story is. It was poor in comparison to the others and I struggled with some of the scenes in it - a bit far-fetched in my opinion. But the stories are generally emotionally resonant and provide an insight into the characters’ motivation and decisions. I had to work to remain patient when interrupted while listening, as I desperately needed to know what would happen next, and later, how it would all end!

The characters are complex, the setting (a Greek island) unusual for Nesbo, and the plot’s strands mingle past and present to turn the story into a meditation on guilt and second chances that’s fascinating. Mark Deakins read as Will and Alex McKenna read as Yvonne in Rat Island, which I enjoyed less than some of the other stories. There is Nils, the oldest, who couldn't escape his suffocating home soon enough, and Pierre, the youngest, easily bullied and quick to lash out.The first half of the book is a collection of stories about jealousy, while the second half focuses on power. While I've always enjoyed Nesbo's writing I was quite surprised at the depth of knowledge and intellect on display in these stories as some quite complex ideas come into play and the reader has to use their own grey matter. Things started off quite well for me, with “London”, a tight little tale of two strangers on a plane (and quite possibly my fave out of the entire book).
