Mike (Michael John Knight) Smith, universally known as MJK, was born on 30 June 1933 at Westcotes, Leicestershire. He was educated at Stamford School and St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. As previously announced, the 2020 AGM, postponed from 21 March, has been rescheduled for Saturday 10 October. The teams moved to New Zealand, where England went up 1-0. Smith was drafted in for the second Test at Wellington, where Fred Trueman and Knight skittled out the hosts for 194. Ken Barrington scored a diligent 76 while four others crossed 30. At 265 for 8 England were in a strong position, but they had not yet batted New Zealand out of the Test.

He played 4 Tests in The Ashes that antipodean summer without much success (missing out the one England lost). He was a part of the second Test that England won at MCG. He did catch Alan Davidson in each innings and Bobby Simpson in the first. He also batted for over an hour for an unbeaten 6, securing a 16-run lead for England. While we don't know MJK Smith birth time, but we do know his mother gave birth to his on a Friday. People who are born on a Friday are social, have self-confidence, and and a generous personality. It was, in fact, in South Africa in 1960 that Smith played one of his most remarkable innings, batting for a Commonwealth side, raised and managed by that great pioneer, Ron Roberts, against Natal. I remember Norman O'Neill talking about the innings soon afterwards and saying how it had shown him an entirely new range of leg-side strokes, from the chip into the open spaces to the lap, played with extraordinary certainty from far outside the off stump. Mike made 204 that Durban day, the highest of his 68 hundreds, and you may be sure that any off spinners or slow orthodox left-armers who had bowled at him went home scratching their heads. Sadly, he could not be presented with the trophy amid the applause of our members, as the AGM on 21 March has had to be postponed because of the Covid-19 emergency.
