When using a paintbrush to spread out masking fluid you can use masking fluid that comes in a jar, tube, tub, or applicator bottle. A little wax was also rolled across the paper under the tree, which helped to create sparkle and light in the snow. As an added precaution, the lid has a pin attached to it to prevent the tip from clogging up while out of use. It is also advisable to remove the frisket as soon as possible, as the orange tint could stain paper if left on for too long.

Art masking fluid is a product that can be used to keep certain areas clear of paint so that the white surface shows through once you have finished painting. Liquid masking fluid can be used with watercolors and other mixed media art, there is masking fluid for each type of project.To use brushes I dip them first into soapy water which to a certain extent will protect the fibers of the brush. Make sure you know where you want your highlights to sit or what areas you want the masking fluid to be. So I've already put a wash down on this painting, but maybe I want to preserve some of these yellows and things in here.

You can apply masking fluid from an applicator bottle straight onto the artwork and move it around with a brush or you could dip your brush into a tub and go from there. A good idea to stop your whole tub or jar of masking fluid from drying out is to decant some of the fluid into a bowl for use, and then replace the cap on the bottle right away. After you have applied masking fluid a few times, make sure that you dip your paintbrush into the soapy water again. It’s a good technique for making small linear marks of white by removing the surface layers of paint, but it does damage the surface of the paper, and is really only good for small areas. They do need to be dipped quite often as there are no fibers, which also makes them easier to clean.Bubbles contribute to clumping in but this is a very minor issue that may not even arise if you are careful with how hard you squeeze the bottle. Remember that if you are working with negative space, as in the example below, you will apply the masking fluid to the gaps between your different subjects. Remove the masking fluid quickly once the paint has properly dried as it will lessen the risk of tearing the paper.

The tree in the foreground had masking tape, fluid and wax applied at the start of the painting to suggest the snow on the pine tree. When using a new product its alway best to do a trial run or a little test sheet before starting your main project. The art masking fluid is applied and must dry before painting, providing a waterproof layer on the paper in the design you want. Make sure to get the soap in the bristles really well, and go all the way up to the ferrule (the metal part).
