The idea of this costume came from the hit show American Horror Story; Freak Show. In this season, there is a new, terrifying character named Twisty the Clown. My boyfriend [Ryan] insisted that he dress up as the clown for Halloween. I thought “Greaaattttttt.” Two problems: the show premiered October 8th so I knew this meant there wouldn’t be a mask or costume to buy and next, I’m absolutely terrified of clowns. This could be the challenge that breaks my fear, plus I love being creative. When he returned to Jupiter, he learned his mother had died. To most, that would be a tragedy. But Twisty’s mother suffered from alcoholism, which caused her to drop him as a baby. He tried desperately to sell the toys he made at a local toy store. But the shop owner wasn’t interested. The disinterest caused Twisty to fly into a rage, realizing that the rumors from the carnival had followed him to Jupiter. Defeated, he tried to take his life with a shotgun. His attempt failed, and he ended up mangling his lower jaw. He started to wear a mask to hide the disfigured lower jaw. That was when he decided to keep children “safe” from their parents. His methods were gory and murderous, but he believed he was doing the right thing. Other ideas for an Asylum group costume are: a more scandalous Sister Mary Eunice complete with red lingerie; Angel of Death Frances Conroy; an alien; Bloody Face; Pepper (pics if you do this one, please!); Briarcliff-rattled Lana; Adam Levine missing an arm.

Later, he replaced his Pierrot clown hat with what appears to be the severed scalp of another, unknown clown. The predominantly bald scalp had a yellow tuft of hair on the left, a large dark green tuft on the middle, and a red tuft on the right. The middle red pom pom was replaced with a yellow one, and Twisty ditched his big red clown nose. As time progressed, his costume became grey and degraded, and his paint appears to have been left on for months. At this point, the initially bright and cheerful clown's appearance had become so warped, it could instill suspicion in adults, and uncontrollable fear in children. At Mordrake's demand and with a little ghost magic, the clown told his sad story of slander, attempted suicide, kidnapping, and murder. Mordrake's demon head named the clown the one that it seeks and Twisty was subsequently stabbed and killed by Mordrake. Then his ghost was invited to join Edward's menagerie of freakish spooks. However, Twisty ends up enjoying being part of his circus. [2]

Scissors - I did use them for smaller cuts. You can use pinking shears to prevent fraying. I should have done this! I am a 5'2" woman. I got the idea to create this costume while watching the second episode of AHS:Freakshow on FX. There were numerous articles on the web about how he freaked out even the cast members when the actor (John Carroll Lynch) was in full costume and makeup and just standing on set! Couple that with the general fear of clowns and I felt this was the costume for me! The mask is the focal point of the character, along with being the most difficult piece to make. I started with a base of tin foil followed by paper mache layers made with newspaper and liquid latex. After about 5 layers, I added fake fingernails as teeth. I put hot glue along the top of the nails to make it look like gums. I didn’t think it was 3D enough so I used air-dry modeling clay to shape the lips, chin, and surrounding area. He was so scary that actors had to leave the set after takes and regularly complained of nightmares.The actor's call sheet listed the character as "twisted clown". The name Twisty is never used on the show until Season 7. [6] Next, I put down a couple more layers of only liquid latex on top to keep everything together. All of the materials held up great! After all was dry, I painted the mask with acrylic paint. His attire was found at local thrift stores and the clown accessories were sewn on. Even after being falsely accused of being a pedophile, which cost him his job, Twisty's love of children inspired him to make toys for a local toy shop to sell. Unfortunately, his tainted reputation spread to the toy shop, and he was ostracized by the entire community. Due to the dwarfs at the freak show spreading the accusation, Twisty hates freaks. He also hates smoking, as it makes his throat burn. After his attempted suicide, Twisty's simple and child-like mind degraded into a delusional maniac, with a very lose grasp on reality. It may be due to brain damage from loss of blood and even lead poisoning from the bullets. Either way, twisty was willing to murder, kidnap, and try to brainwash children into loving him again. He was still simple, but retained an animalistic cunning, and was very good at evading the authorities and abducting people, all the while remaining undetected. He also held onto the opinion he was merely a good clown, and totally oblivious to the atrocities he caused, suggesting that he is completely insane. Twisty also was a good craftsman, making cages, and whirligigs.

An informal survey taken at this office revealed Asylum to be the scariest season of American Horror Story so far. Probably the best, too, especially if you just ignore the alien stuff. Because, what? Anyway, an insane asylum, creepy religious-motifs, “The Name Game” dance sequence, cute boys with extreme mommy issues, and Chloe Sevigny, all add up to make this the season to watch.In 2017, Twisty's murders became so famous that he spawned his own comic book franchise, Twisty: the Clown Chronicles. It is shown that young Oz Mayfair-Richards is a big fan of the series, despite his mother being a coulrophobic. Oz also has an action figure of Twisty. I took the dried fur, rolled them to make tubes and hot glued the seam, then attached to the top of the bald cap with liquid latex while wearing it. This is less involved than previous costumes, but it is sewing intensive. My sewing is brute force at best. I come to sewing by way of wood working, so I'm sure there are better ways to do this. I had to redo many seams. To make the hair, I cut three rectangle pieces of fur and dipped each one in watered down acrylic paint matching the colors of the original.
