So you're ready to try out oil-based colored pencils, but where do you start? By comparing the three lightfast colour wheels above, we can see there is a difference between the lightfast wax-based and oil-based coloured pencils. The performance of these colored pencils is very good as they are soft and blend very well with an oil-based colored pencil. Being one of the most affordable sets and having the most pencils makes these pencils a good choice for a colorist on a budget. These are very comparable to the Magicfly 72 colored pencil set above, except there is no lightfast rating. Solvents aside, one great way to get uniform and consistent blends in your artwork is to use a white colored pencil (or whatever color the surface is that you are drawing on) as a way to manipulate this medium.

Oil-Based Colored Pencils Make Vibrant Hues with the Best Oil-Based Colored Pencils

Higher-end brands tend to have break-resistant cores. If your colored pencils break often when sharpening or using, you can end up having to replace them sooner. Rubbing alcohol can be used to blend colored pencils, but it is best used for wax-based colored pencils. It breaks down the wax binder and allows for easier blending of the pigments. Both have the same colours and when used together, the final drawing is one with depth and texture.Getting that realistic photo quality effect can be achieved with patience and practice. Though standard paint thinners and acetone can be used they are not recommended as they can give off more fumes that are harmful if inhaled especially for long periods of time. Use solvents from an art supply store as these are designed for oil-based pigments which will work for blending colored pencils and some brands are odorless.
