Situated on the fringe of the Pitlochry town in a lovely little valley hidden away from general view and just 8 minutes drive from us here at Atholl PalaceHotel. Despite Edradour being so small it produces more whiskies than majority of other distilleries and it still stands alone as the last stronghold of handmade 10 year single malt whisky from a farm distillery which is still in production today since 1825. Guided tours include a taste of their finest whisky, an audio-visual presentation and a real insight into the traditional methods of whisky making. Dewars Distillery The distillery was believed to have been founded by two men in 1798; John Stewart and Robert Robertson. They originally named it ‘Aldour’ derived from Scottish ‘Allt Dour’ signifying the ‘burn of the otter.’ The initial years of existence of the distillery were a failure and it was mothballed. Dewar’s Distillery is located on the outskirts of the picturesque small market town of Aberfeldy, just over 20 minutes from Atholl PalaceHotel. Even today, the Aberfeldy Distillery, is considered ‘The home to Dewar’s World of Whisky’ this is because it is of great importance as it is the home of the respected single malt that is the heart of the Dewar’s family of blends.By the 1970s, Bell’s was being built into the UK’s top-selling blended Scotch and, as a result, Blair Athol was doubled in capacity. Guinness (which bought Bell’s in 1985, and after further mergers evolved into Diageo) opened a visitor’s centre in 1987. Whisky connoisseurs will enjoy visiting many of the distilleries in Pitlochry, Perthshire and the surrounding areas during your stay at Atholl Palace Hotel. In particular, there are two local distilleries in Pitlochry, the picturesque Edradour which is the smallest working distillery in Scotland and Blair Athol Distillery. Nearby in Aberfeldy is the “Dewars World of Whisky”, and in Crieff, you enjoy a day out to “The Famous Grouse Experience”. Or if you prefer, venture further North and you will find Dalwhinnie Distillery. Blair Atholl Distillery Blair Athol (pronounced: blair ATH-ol) is a quiet yet beautiful distillery that has modestly been producing a robust highland distillate for a lot longer than most currently operation distilleries. Founded in 1798 it has always been one of the more ˜under the radar distilleries but anyone who has had the privilege of visiting it is usually bowled over by its old-style Scottish architectural beauty, not to mention the muscular elegance of its spirit. The original name was the 'Aldour'. By 1932 and throughout the WWII, Blair Athol was shut until the new owners ‘Arthur Bell & Sons’ rebuilt it in 1949 and added two more stills in 1970. Get to Perth-Inverness road via the A9 dual carriageway and alight at the junction where you’d see a signpost that bears the direction of Pitlochry. Travel left and get under the flyover onto the A924 which leads directly to Pitlochry. Just one mile after exiting the dual carriageway, turn to your right and there lies the distillery. BP filling station is on the right. Train The archives included cellar inventories known as “bin books” and one, dated July 23 1834 – one year after the whisky was initially casked – shows cask whisky recorded in the cellar.
