I so enjoy reading academy books with vampires, wolves and fae. I hope to see even more paranormal creatures in future books. Year One kept reminding me of the Twilight saga and the Vampire Diaries. With Cole, Rage, Damien and Greg I kept wondering if we were going to see all the guys fighting over Raven like in Twilight or Vampire Diaries. Well or at least competing for her attention. The film does not sanitize the milieu from which these pictures were borne. Goldin lucidly speaks about the dangers of sex work, which she herself undertook. She performed as a go-go dancer in New Jersey, and later became what she calls the “dominatrix” of Tin Pan Alley, a female-run bar that drew an unlikely clientele of leftists, art-world types, queer people, and IRS workers. Goldin also reports that there was violence at home, courtesy of her partner at the time, Brian, who physically abused her. There’s a photograph of Goldin gazing into the camera’s lens, with one of her eyes bloodied, its lid the color of an eggplant; the image lingers with you. The plot of Bloodshed Academy Year One is kinda genius. I mean there is a female who grows into her power, female friendship, guys who support and protect but let the girl do her thing. There are secrets, shady staff, and so many easter eggs. I mean I have my theories because certain things were mentioned and I couldn't help but put two and two together. However, I still have questions especially the one about Raven and Cole because something happened earlier in the story and then a fact was mentioned towards the end of the story which has me asking a very important question.This book was kinda stupid. I can’t believe I actually finished it and I’m definitely not reading the next book in the series. I struggled with Damien's narrator, just not modulated, didn't transition well as story moved between being imposing, violent, seductive and emotive, I found it too grating at times and had to stop listening, something I had not done before, most likely because the previous narrator on 'scream for us' made those transitions seamlessly. I don't know if that's a narrator experience thing but I feel like the listener got the 'diet coke' version of Damien in this audiobook.
