The country’s coat of arms consists of a man and a woman supporting a warrior shield. The warrior shield is divided into four sections. The first section includes a burning torch (represents knowledge and enlightenment). The second section consists of the flag of the country, the third section is an ax and a hoe representing agriculture, while the fourth section contains wavy bands of blue and white representing the land and sea. The phrase “Uhuru na Umoja” appear at the bottom of the shield. From 1896 to 1963 Tanzania was represented by the Flag of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, a British protectorate. Tanzania has a weird solution for raiding elephants that stray into farmlands – “Throw condoms filled with chili powder at them”, and it totally works.
