In 2008, Anna Hibiscus was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award and the United Kingdom Literacy Association shortlist. At first I was puzzled as to why you’d just thrust the reader into the family situation so abruptly. Aided by Lauren Tobia’s charming illustrations, readers will delight in exploring Anna’s world alongside her in this series from beloved Nigerian storyteller Atinuke. I think I’ll start including the Lexile measure on the chapter books I review simply because these are books where having a just-right reading level is really important.All this would be enough but it’s illustrator Lauren Tobia who knows how to really bring these stories to life. This type of writing is like poetry where it is always special to hear the author's own voice in the character of his or her creation.
