If you enjoy pining and characters that try to hide their feelings even though everyone knows you both should be together, this is it! The romance was also so refreshing beginning with Hades as our dark and brooding love interest, and Persephone (Kore) as a witty match and a thorn in his side. She also had so many opportunities to fall into my least favourite trope - the main character who will sacrifice them self at every opportunity - but she didn't, she wanted to fight for what she wanted and what she'd earned. I loved the back n forth of the dialog, and the way the relationship between the two MC's developed.

I adored how fearless Fitzgerald was in creating a whole new profile for Hades and think she succeeded in bringing him to life in such a believable way. The God of Death and the King of the Underworld is meant to have some kind of bite to him and this guy was the equivalent to a fluffy rabbit.

They were so open verbally about boundaries, the definitions of their relationships, and very vocal about their sexual relationship which was so refreshing to see in a book about young people figuring things out for the first time. I was way more focused on the character elements of the story and persephone’s personal growth, and I actually didn’t really care for the actual plot of the book weirdly. Girl, Goddess, Queen is a thoroughly modern retelling that turns the story of Hades and Persephone completely on its head, breathing new life into the classic mythos.

So Persephone needs to get married because apparently that's all that matters to gods (why have we gone down this road? And for this one, its a retelling with a bit of a mix where Persephone is the one who is smart and cunning whilst Hades is the soft one in this relationship. It felt like I was constantly being told that Demeter has been horrible to her daughter and Hades loves art. I did like the writing and I would pick something up from this author again which is why I gave this two stars.

In this rendition, its an coming-of-age story of Persephone and of her finding her ways into her girlhood and adulthood, by running to Hell and making Hades protect her under his oath.

Hades and Persephone just felt too different from what we associate them with, and the main focus of the story revolved around marriage for some ungodly reason. Girl, Goddess, Queen is an incredibly fun and wonderfully crafted reimagining of a beloved myth - bringing to life timeless gods, the complex intimacy of family bonds, a fierce protagonist, and a passionate slow-burn romance. This will forever and always be my favourite book about Hades and Persephone (because I’m a little sick of the smutty or all serious no-fun ones on the market at the moment), so if you want a bomb ass fun book about fake dating and trying to take down a parthenon then please pick this one up. I don’t think this was the case with this one, and I think Fitzgerald did a really great job of making the world, the characters, the politics etc really easy to digest and follow along with.

Persephone (or Kore) came over as quite immature and at times pretty annoying and Hades wasn’t much better. The cover was one of small details that pushed me to get this book and when I saw that it’s available on Netgalley I knew instantly that I must get it! I was expecting more tension and a slow burning longing, and gradual development/realisation of feelings.

I most definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a unique original spin on the story of Hades and Persephone. She spends the majority of the novel talking about how she doesn't want to get married and how she doesn't want a man to touch her. The romance is perfectly paced, complementing rather than overriding the anxieties and expectations that both characters wrestle with throughout the book.
