I was lucky to receive an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and opinion. The song starts off similar to original rhymes but had an additional tenth bird that was not to be missed; in this case that was of course the next episode of the series.

I felt like the author crammed a LOT of ideas into this one, and perhaps could have been saved for a different book. The characters are realistic with problems of their own, combined to mesh together to enclose the main idea of this book…. As readers we are taken to the very edge with a case that is set to rock Edinburgh to its very core. With twists and turns you’ll never see coming, prepare to be gripped by this devastatingly good thriller.

The police face down death every day but they couldn’t predict the speed, or trauma that would be inflicted on families in the city… and within their own professional lives. In 1846 the rhyme was added to Proverbs and Popular Saying of the Seasons by Michael Aislabie Denham, an English merchant and collector of folklore. It becomes clear that no one is safe and Edinburgh’s finest find themselves at the very centre of it.A second story of Quinn is going on which seemed unconnected in the beginning but Helen Fields made a connection.

There are some really gory and intriguing crimes, a puzzling riddle and sky-high stakes in this book which allows the pace to fly and no sleep to be had whilst I was reading it. Also, I really enjoyed Dr Carlisle’s appearance - I am looking forward to seeing him again at some stage.Marie-Claire Amuah’s bittersweet novel, set in London and Ghana, follows the rites of passage of an ambitious young woman whose damaged childhood threatens to derail her career. If you have read Helen Fields' last novel, The Shadow Man, then you may well recognise one of the guest characters in the book. In other iterations, this song has been utilized in regard to crows or other birds associated with bad or good luck.
