Using the Sigma USB Dock (more on this later) and a custom mode, the autofocus range can be customized as desired. The Intelligent OS system promises a maximum four stops of correction, which equates to around 1/13sec at 200mm, although testing shows that a steady hand can yield even better results. Unless your wildlife subject is very large and/or very close, the longest native focal length in this lens (I'll discuss the teleconverter options later in the review) will usually be found far too short for this task. With this latter feature, the user is able to continue using autofocus as normal, before making any final manual adjustments using the focusing ring around the lens.

Two pieces of SLD (the special low dispersion) glass in the front lens group and another two in the rear group offer excellent correction of chromatic aberration. With long focal lengths and a wide aperture, that this lens can create a strong background blur is unquestionable.

Containing a superset of the classic 85-135mm portrait focal length range, 70-200mm lenses are ideal for capturing pleasing perspectives of people. The lenses in this series continue to impress and gain popularity – just don't limit the lens' use to its letter designation. As is usually the case, moving up to a full-frame camera, some things get better (sharpness at maximum aperture and chromatic aberration), while other things get much worse (shading and distortion). With 11 rounded aperture blades, this lens will create 22-point starbursts from point light sources when narrower apertures are used (f/16 in this case).

We’d also expected to be able to customize the Focus Hold buttons, for example so that they initiated autofocus instead, but the button setting was greyed out in the Optimization Pro software. I already mentioned the weight that goes with this attribute; increased size and cost compared a narrower aperture lens with a similar focal length range are additional drawbacks.Meanwhile, chromatic aberrations and distortions are negligible, and there’s very good resistance to ghosting and flare.
