There is no one better than Fassett at seeing images and patterns in the world and translating them into knits, e. I think this is an absolutely excellent quilting book for anyone who needs a reminder of what one can do with color--I highly recommend it to anyone who is tired of the same old traditional color schemes and the not-so-inventive, often washed-out contemporary ones.

The quilt show week-long program included classes by big name quilters and that year, Kaffe Fassett was the keynote speaker as well as one of the quilting instructors. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Since some of my stash is aging, perhaps this classic books serves up ideas on how to use them in patterns of their same era. As he pointed out specific details about the color combinations that he admired in each example, phrases like “love the chanciness”, “otherworldly palette”, “sings out” and “absorbs heat” were combined with positive encouragements like “gorgeous”, “stunning”, “outrageous”, “lush” and “delicate”. The book is divided into five chapters by colour themes: gentle Soft Pastels, bold and brassy Circus hues, fresh Leafy Gardens, alluring Antique Stone Colours and rich Renaissance tones. It's his choice of colors and fabrics that makes them sparkle and with this book as inspiration anyone can learn to see color as freely as Kaffe Fassett does. Kaffe Fassett, an accomplished painter and designer of textiles, is widely acknowledged as a visionary in the use of color.

I first borrowed this book from the library nearly 10 years ago, then purchased it 5 years ago, and I am still browsing through it. With this lavish book Kaffe Fassett delves into an exciting new textile arena, injecting elegance and richness into the contemporary quilting world.

His "Red Diamonds Quilt" is vibrant with patches of sunflowers, grapes and a multitude of floral designs. For me, his knitting designs were not exactly easy or quick and I was busy starting a career and a family. This final discourse was as much a critique as it was another lesson in the language and the concepts of Kaffe’s color world. There are no shortage of color photographs and most of the designs are pictured close up and then pictured again being used in the home decor.

I gathered a new idea just this week from the book and even though the floral fabrics are dated - looking at the shapes and color ways i have a new quilt brewing in my mind. Well worth the money, even if you only look at the book and don't actually make any of the designs - I was inspired! The high level of intensity and energy that he maintained all day despite having passed the age of 80 was incredible. Kaffe started his artistic career as a painter, first in the US and then in the UK where he moved in 1964. In the mid 1980’s when I was deep into knitting, he came out with his landmark knitting design book. Not only is Kaffe exuberant in his tactile use of color he is also extremely passionate and erudite when he talks about color in his creative world.Adjectives like “delicious”, “voluptuous”, “fresh”, “juicy”, and “passionate” were liberally sprinkled in his vocabulary and rolled off his tongue easily.
