Author Renee Knight leaves enough ambiguity throughout the novel to keep the narrative suspenseful and interesting. It is a cheap and lazy gimmick and the author does nothing to salvage it and can't, in a book where the characterization is so paper thin.

Still, there's something a bit empty and soulless about it, and I doubt it will prove to be very memorable.But as she reads the novel, she's horrified to read about a specific day in her own life--one that occurred 20 years earlier--which she's tried valiantly to forget. So, Catherine in 2013 is a respected and loved woman, who has recently moved house and is looking forward to the future. Renee Knight skilfully peels away the layers of her story to reveal a tale that is dark, deep and skin crawlingly sinister. The marvel of the new suspense novel “Disclaimer” is that it lives up to its unusually gripping premise.

There have been lots of comparisons made to Gone Girl (and equally lots of people claiming that it's nothing like Gone Girl). It’s not that the ending was bad or I had some expectations for it, it’s just that some explanations at the end didn’t seem right to me. It will make you wonder how well do people know themselves and their partner and are there any big, dark secrets they’re keeping away from the world. What if you found a book on your shelf, not knowing how it got there, started reading it and realized it was all about you, but with the names changed?Blame is now turned entirely upside down and it is Jonathan, and his parents who deserve our disgust. I am a fan of a good psychological thriller and this hit that mark as well, plus there is a great family drama to be had here with some emotional and intense themes that drive the narrative in a most fascinating way – I was utterly engaged with both Catherine and Stephen, their lives and their personal relationships and as it becomes obvious that not everything is clear cut, it is addictive stuff for sure. It mattered less that I didn't like much about the central cast than that Knight never really gave me a reason to care about the outcomes or even instil much belief in her portrayals of family life. However, I did feel that the issue was handled very well at the end; Stephen's acceptance of Catherine's story, the comparison Catherine makes between Robert's reaction to the 'affair' then the rape, and her decision thereafter.
