Nintendo Switch grips come in all shapes and sizes. Some are designed exclusively for the regular Switch or Switch OLED, while others, like the stellar Satisfye ZenGrip Pro, are compatible with both models. Naturally, the significantly smaller Switch Lite requires its own separate grip, but there are great options for the handheld-only Switch, too. I spotted the Pikachu and Mimikyu one on Play Asia last night, but not the Gengar one. They’re both quite nice-looking, but the Gengar one even more so. Not that Hori is wrong, they need to print their stuff with what will make them more money, but those I said are so repetitive that its gotten boring already. 20 years ago, eevee, pikachu, charmander, etc were already boring clichés.Comparing the controllers playing Hollow Knight (Trial of the Fool), it's just way easier on the Pros compared to the others. Some of that may be muscle memory, but trying to hold Y while hitting B with the base of my thumb was a lot more difficult. HD rumble though, now there's something that I actually use and value. That, and the type of games that I would desire a d-pad for aren't the type of games that I would need a gyro and camera for anyways. As with Satisfye's previous model, the ZenGrip Pro is extremely lightweight--it doesn't make the console feel any heavier (in fact, because it makes holding the Switch so much easier, it almost feels lighter). The bottom of the grip has two hooks for additional console support, and they also allow the Switch to stand securely upright on its own, with enough room for the charging cable to run underneath. The Satisfye Nintendo Switch grip has been one of our favorites for some time, and the updated version of it, the ZenGrip Pro 3, is absolutely the one to buy, as this model works for both Switch OLED and the original Switch.Continuing on the theme of things the Split Pad Compact doesn’t offer, you won’t find HD rumble (or standard definition rumble, for that matter), an NFC reader, an IR camera (though when does the Joy-Con really ever use that anyway), or a gyro sensor. Rumble is convenient to have, sure, but the gyro sensor can be critical for certain games. For instance, you’ll never beat all of the shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild without that gyro, and aiming arrows may prove more difficult. The controller is missing a few features found in Joy-Con controllers. It doesn't offer rumble, motion controls, NFC support, or the IR camera. The Split Pad is powered by the Switch console itself, which means it doesn't work when detached from the tablet. The Split Pad Compact is strictly for handheld play, but that's really not a criticism. It does what it sets out to do extremely well. Both Split Pad models are definitely worth considering if you're goal is to not only improve the ergonomics of handheld mode, but add more traditional controls. For single-player titles like Xenoblade 3, the Hori Split Pad Compact performed excellently. We never felt like we missed any features like IR or HD Rumble in the games that we tested. In the Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection, we were really able to put the controller through its paces.

Our favorite option in 2023 is still Hori's Split Pad, but now there are two different models: the Split Pad Pro and Split Pad Compact. Fitted with a built-in 10,000mAh internal battery, Newdery's grip roughly doubles the battery life while playing in handheld mode. It's only compatible with the regular Nintendo Switch, though.

Also use Turbo Hold to set the button to continually activate Turbo without having to hold the button down. If the Split Pad Pro looks too bulky for you but you're still interested in its features, the newer Split Pad Compact for Hori is an excellent choice.

In case you missed it, these Joy-Con-like controllers are a follow-up to Hori's Switch Split Pad Pro, and are officially releasing here in the west as the Switch Split Pad Compact. They'll be available here in two different colours, but over in Japan there are four - and now even more options to choose from! Skull & Co has made a series of great Nintendo Switch grips that offer something most other grips don't: customization. Skull & Co's NeoGrip is a lightweight attachment for Switch and Switch OLED. It comes with three different handle sets that can be swapped on the fly. Other big issue for me is the feel of the buttons. The ABXY buttons are too mushy and imprecise feeling. The Joy Cons are small but feel crisp and precise, and the Pros feel again like an Xbox controller with a crisp response and springy rebound.Whether you're in the market for a grip for Switch OLED or the regular Switch, we'd recommend opting for the ZenGrip Pro 3 since it's compatible with both and is available for the same price. Rumble often makes such a tangible difference in games, especially as I have been mostly playing classic DOOM over the last couple of months, so much so that playing it on PC again without the tactility of rumble feels like a downgrade! (though both platforms have their pros and cons)
