Other than hard drive storage size, there is no difference between these three versions of the Quest 2. All other features are the exact same. Can you upgrade the Quest 2 storage later? However, what helps is that the Quest comes with a long, 6 metre-long cable, presumably this is so you can keep playing when it's charging. That means it's suddenly tethered again, but at least you have the option to charge and play. Speaking of the Guardian; it seems to remember earlier settings, which is nice when you're playing on the same spot again in the future. Being able to see your surroundings while setting the Guardian is awesome! Something I missed with the original Rift.

Before I continue, it’s worth talking about Facebook, Oculus’ parent company. By October 2020, new Oculus users will have to log in to their device using a Facebook account, rather than an Oculus one. Existing Oculus account holders can choose to swap to Facebook (or not) until January 2023, at which point it will happen automatically.

Out of the box you get the Quest headset, touch controllers, power adapter, charging cable, glasses spacer, batteries and instructions. Then, of course, there’s the small fact that the Quest 2 supports Oculus Link, meaning you can plug it into your gaming PC via a single cable and play games from your Steam library. It’s no surprise that Oculus is retiring the Rift S: the Quest is an excellent PC VR headset in its own right. The Quest follows on from the Oculus Go, the affordable, standalone device from Oculus released in 2018. Although the Go still has a place for those keen to try VR (or, more precisely 360-video) on a budget, the Quest is a massive step up in every way. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners will scratch that zombie-slaying itch, Cook-Out is a scrumptious cookery co-op venture, and Pistol Whip is an addictive rhythm-based shooter. You’ve also got the amazing Echo VR, which is essentially PvP online multiplayer volleyball in zero gravity. It’s a surreal experience and one of the best showcases of VR’s potential. The battery gives me quite a bit of play time (about 2 hours), and if needed one can charge while playing (charger or Powerbank - it seems the USB-c charger/Powerbank should at least support 5V/2.6A). I haven't had a need for that, because after 2 hours of playing, it's nice to take a little break anyway.

You can technically keep playing with the headset plugged into a power source, but the bundled charging cable is far too short. You could buy your own USB-C to USB-C charging cable (the Oculus Link cable is a good shout), but it feels like a needless extra expense. Design The first Oculus Quest made use of dual 1440 x 1600 resolution OLED displays (one for each eye), but the Quest 2 opts for a single LCD panel, split so as to display an 1832 x 1920 pixel resolution per eye. That’s about 50 percent sharper than the original, and while we’d usually prefer the richness of an OLED display, we hardly missed it here. LCD also opens up an improved refresh rate of 90Hz to developers, compared to the original Quest’s 72Hz - with an experimental feature bumping it up to 120Hz. Where supported, it will be a notably smoother experience.

An all-in-one virtual reality system for everyone

Note though that there's a change to the Interpupillary distance (IPD, the gap between your pupils) slider on the Quest 2. Previously, you could make fine adjustments with a slider on the underside of the original Quest. Now you have to physically shift the goggles themselves over three pre-set distances, 58mm, 63mm, and 68mm. While most won't notice any difference (the three settings cover the most common IPD ranges), it's a shame that more delicate control has been lost. What's more, where the Quest 2 is concerned developers now have the option to make their games run at 90Hz and even 120Hz (this is important for increased comfort and even more realism while playing), and the headset itself is noticeably lighter than before, with double the battery life in the controllers.

Virtual reality can be seen as an ‘empathy’ platform, letting you experience not only other worlds, but other lives and cultures. There are great apps from National Geographic and other organizations that let you visit locations around the world for a spot of virtual tourism, while also opening up the very real dangers of climate change. With fitness studios and meditation spots also available in app form, if you can visit it in the real world, there’s a good chance there’s a VR alternative being developed, or already in existence. Oculus made the announcement alongside the recall of the foam facial interface announcement where they announced that Oculus Quest 2 users could receive a free silicon cover. Types of Content This is a great upgrade of Oculus Go. The rendering Quality is pretty good, with almost no Dithering. 360 degree photos look awesome especially since you can move around. The Guardian is a bit of a pain since it keeps getting reset. But there are some significant changes that would make an upgrade well worth it if you currently already have the original Quest and you’re considering the Quest 2. The new model offers a more responsive experience overall, thanks to improved RAM and chip specs. It also has a higher resolution display, which is a whole 50% sharper than its predecessor. Combined, these upgrades make the Oculus Quest 2 experience even more seamless and immersive.

For those new to VR these numbers might not mean much – after all you don't know what you're getting yet. In that case, it's probably best to weigh up the price against other entertainment devices. In-game worlds immediately look sharper, making it more difficult to see those immersion-shattering screen door effects. The odd game, such as Thumper, still sees a bit of pixelation among all the hypnotic visual effects, but the likes of Beat Saber, Robo Recall and Tetris Effect all look outstanding with bright colours and clear detail. Alongside Vader Immortal, Oculus has confirmed Quest ports for a number of other games, including Superhot VR, The Climb, Face Your Fears, The Unspoken, Robo Recall and Stormlands. One cool thing Oculus did as well, is that when a title is available for the Rift and the Quest, your previously bought games will be available on the Quest as well (eg. Robo Recall).
