Combine a stay in La Gomera’s pastel-hued seaside capital San Sebastián with delightful agricultural Hermigua in the less touristy north (near lovely volcanic Playa de la Caleta). San Sebastián’s historic centre features laurel-shaded plazas, ancient mansions and the 15th-century church where Columbus is said to have prayed before setting off for the Americas. A 200-year-old volcanic-stone home just north-east of La Oliva has been sensitively restored as the Hotel Rural Mahoh (doubles from €60 B&B), with nine rustic rooms, a pool and a superb Canarian restaurant. Situated on the south eastern coast to the north of Arrecife, Costa Teguise is Lanzarote’sthird largesttourist resort. There are plenty of the latter to suit a range of budgets at the big three resorts. Puerto del Carmen is the largest and closest to the airport, with everything from affordable apartments to high-quality hotels. The nightlife is lively and the beaches bustle, but those seeking peace or authenticity will be better off elsewhere. There's a small historic quarter that is also well worth exploring in and around the Charco and Church de San Gines. Where you will also find some good, atmospheric restaurants.Most visits to La Palma start with the 47 sq km Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente, whose scented pine forests sprawl around the Caldera de Taburiente depression (accessed from El Paso or Los Llanos). Hiking here is a Canary Islands highlight, especially around the Barranco de las Angustias, the Roque de los Muchachos and the 1,854m-high Pico Bejenado. There’s more walking among the Los Tilos laurel forests in north-east La Palma. Take a dip in the saltwater pools in nearby San Andrés, with its 16th-century church. Small fishing village - and an amazing beach - on the North-West coast, which is highly popular with local and international surfers.

Costa Teguise is the least sheltered of Lanzarote´s main resorts as well as the most northerly. As a result, during the winter months, it can be cooler, cloudier and windier here than in resort rivals to the south. Which in part explains why it has fallen behind Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca to become Lanzarote´s number 3 resort. Playa Blanca is the island’s newest resort and is located right on the southern tip of Lanzarote. The resort is based around the original village, but has extended almost to Papagayo in one direction, and to the lighthouse in the other. After visiting the market, we went for lunch at the trendy Cantina Restaurant. Specialising in tapas style sharing plates, the food here was absolutely delicious! We loved the tuna carpaccio in particular, as well as the mushroom croquettes with truffle. The prices were a little higher than a standard tapas bar, but the quality was excellent. Timanfaya National Park

Now an updated version has appeared for […] One of the best ways to explore Costa Teguise is to take a stroll along the seafront promenade, which will take you past all of the five main beaches and towards the Las Maretas Palace, originally built for King Hussein of Jordan and now used by visiting dignitaries such as the King of Spain and former Prime Minister Zapatero, who is a regular visitor to the island. Costa Teguise Weather Public transport: there are no trains or trams on Lanzarote, but the local bus network is clean, safe and reasonably efficient. The network is not totally comprehensive, though, and routes and timetables are geared more towards locals than tourists.
