There has, however, been a slight adjustment since Uwe first put patch to paper. Nothing that will send shivers down your spine, don’t worry. But those eagle-eyed players amongst you will spot a small but significant change. 14 out of the 33 in total have been adjusted so that cost v reward v quilt coverage is a little more in balance. This is not an in-your-face change, but our final positions have been considerably closer in Halloween than our previous games using either the original and Christmas versions. Now, this could be a coincidence, of course. But I would like to think that the efforts to rejig the gameplay have upped the challenge.

Patchwork is a puzzle-like tile-placement game for two players by Uwe Rosenberg and the perfect example of not judging a book by its cover - or, in this case, a board game by its theme. Other than earning buttons by skipping turns, you can also earn buttons by passing by the button symbols on the time board. Each time you pass by one of these buttons, you count the number of buttons on the patches on your quilt board and earn that many buttons. Patchwork is a fairly light two player game by Uwe Rosenberg in which players compete to place oddly shaped patchwork pieces to form a growing quilt on a personal nine by nine quilt board. Each patchwork piece comes at a cost in buttons and in time which the player must pay.

Each player receives a quilt board and time token of their colour (yellow or green). They also receive five buttons. These buttons are the currency used in the game. The remainder of the buttons are placed on the table close to the playing area. Keep your mice safe from the hungry cat! If you’re the last player with mice left in your bowl in this fast-paced game, then you win. Roll dice to find out what happens. You can squeak by a sleeping cat, but a hungry cat spells trouble. This adorably thematic game comes with little mice pieces, unique dice, and a bowl for the kitty. Here, Kitty, Kitty! To be fair though, even though it felt like a lot of peices were tearing when I punched them out, when taking pictures for this post I didn’t find many pieces that were damaged. Aside from some frayed edges these are the two worst pieces I could find, and the damage on the second one is very hard to see because of the colors used on that patch. Players are dealt the number of cards equal to the number of players (so four players each get four cards) and an optional cat physicist card. Then, they make bets on how many cards are on the table of one kind of cat. For example, the first player might bet that there are three “alive” cats. From here, players will raise or change the bid. But be careful what you bid! Another player can call you out, and if you’re wrong, you’re out. The game came with a single small zip top bag to store the player tokens and pawn which wasn’t enough in my opinion. We typically keep a lot of small bags around for this purpose because a lot of games have this problem. You’ll notice various spaces are marked on the time board which requires the player that passes the space to respond in these ways: A: It depends on whether you enjoy abstract puzzles at all. If you do, you will be happily playing it time after time after time. If you do not, you probably will not get very excited at the idea of playing it again. YouTube Both players have a quilt board, five buttons (this is currency) and a time token. You’ll need the rest of the buttons later so keep them at arms reach! Patchwork ends when both time tokens have been around the time board (to the end space). A token may have more spaces to move at the end, however, it finishes at the last space and that player only receives buttons for those spaces moved (you may have to forfeit some points).

The game ends when both players have run out of time - in other words, when they’ve reached the middle of the time board. When you both finish it’s time to tally up points using the buttons and the special tile (if a player has completed the special tile). Deduct any spaces left on your quilt board (1 space = 2 points), and that decides your winner. Due to the crazy demand, Patchwork was reprinted in 2015, but it became hard to get again quite soon. The Patchwork board game is very simple to setup. Place the time board in the center of the table and arrange all of the quilt pieces in a circle around it. The time board has two sides, they only vary in appearance, so choose whichever side you like better. Place a leather patch on each of the corresponding spaces on the time board, and place the large pawn in front of the smallest patch (the 1×2).The only difference in round three is that for the final patch you can choose any of the final three available. Finally, you count your totals and produce a final score, minus all blanks on your sheet. Apart from being aesthetically superior, creating a quilt with no holes is good because you are more likely to get the 7x7 bonus and it’ll mean fewer minus points at the end of the game. Only the first person to complete a filled-in, hole-free seven-by-seven square earns the 7x7 bonus, which is worth 7 points. A: It is possible, but it does not happen often. So, do not punish yourself too hard if you fail to do that! The central time board is placed in the middle of the playing table and then place both players time tokens on the starting space. Choose who goes first (or the player who last used a needle starts)!
