Launched in 1997 by Citizen, the Promaster NY0040 (known to many as Citizen NY0040) is one of the most recognisable watches from the brand. Many watch enthusiasts can spot this timepiece instantly, from anywhere. Despite the changes it had undergone, it only proved iconic as ever. To this day, the watch remains in production with various iterations available. At first, the idea was to select the best full lume dial watches from the past and the present. But during the research for this article, the scope kept getting wider as the magic of lume is not restricted to full lume dials. While there certainly is a list to be made with the best full lume dials, it would put some amazing watches that play brilliantly with the theme of light by using lume out of scope. So in that light (pun intended), let’s take a look at some of the best lume watches.Whether you are looking to dip your toe into the world of mechanical watches and are looking for a solid starting point, or you are in the market for a quality beater, the Citizen Promaster NY0040 definitely holds its own. Despite having flown under the radar for a long time, I think it’s a watch that deserves more recognition and consideration. With a retail price of around €190, it’s a true value proposition. With a military past for added credibility, these Citizens are a perfect care-free companion for any situation you might find yourself in. Overall, it’s easy to see why the Citizen NY0040 has been such a popular timepiece. I think it’s a shame that it isn’t as well known as its Seiko counterparts to be fair. All jokes aside, I love that the Panerai designers used lume to draw a watch. Not just any watch, but a Panerai watch. The iconic 1982 Citizen Professional Diver 1300m. To deal with saturation diving, Citizen opted for an ultra-hermetic, rust-resistant titanium case. Regarding weaknesses of the SKX007, I dislike how the dial is a crisp white and the hands are off-white. To some, it may appear like patina, but I find it a little cheesy. Also, I see a small gap between the day and date wheel, which is not typical for Seiko. Aside from that, my only other general wish is for a hand-winding movement, but because this is Seiko, I can’t be too surprised that the watch is sold without one. I’m sure that when this is the case, the Promaster will get its chance to shine once again. Let’s take a closer look at this wonderfully underrated dive watch, which I feel makes for the perfect entry-level mechanical watch, or even a perfect weekend beater. Whether you wear it on the jangly OEM bracelet with its handy diver’s extension, on a vented rubber strap, or on a humble Nato strap, you really can’t go wrong.

Another great thing about the watch is that you can always change the strap to any bracelet you prefer. If you don’t like the rubber strap or are looking forward to wearing the watch in a more casual or formal setting, this is what you do. The Citizen NY0040 looks good on any strap such as nylon and stainless steel. Price of the Citizen NY0040 At 42mm in diameter and 12mm in height, the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m is a respectable watch, with average dimensions for a watch of this category. The lugs are short and also well shaped, meaning that the watch sits comfortably on most wrists. What’s important, though, is the material, since this Promaster NY0100, on the contrary to the NY0040, is made of Super Titanium™, which is solid titanium coated with a proprietary surface hardening technology called Duratect. This gives the watch a handsome shine (not the usual dark grey colour, but something brighter), lightness (40% lighter than steel) and scratch-resistance, with more than 1,000Hv hardness. As a result, the watch on its bracelet weighs just 110 grams, compared to more than 150 grams for an equivalent model in stainless steel. And believe us, it does change everything once strapped around the wrist.

NY0040: Better than the Seiko SKX007? Citizen NY0040: Better than the Seiko SKX007?

I have both Citizen Promaster Ny0040 with bracelet and Seiko skx007 and I have to say that Citizen feels more bulky, more solid with a bit of luxury feeling than the Seiko. Seiko feels sportier, it has nice feel too, but Citizen is far better in every aspect such keeping good time (mine goes -3 sec a day than Seiko that goes -10) and it is more durable to hits.The hands come in various shapes. The minute hand has an arrow tip. Meanwhile, the hour hand has a square shape to it with a pointy tip. The second hand comes with a sharp tip and a luminous dot at the end. Those Marathon SARs are brilliant. Plus, you have to give them props for offering such a great range of sizes. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying one, but I have a couple of saved searches set out just in case one day the right one comes around. The NY004’s unique crown position at 8:00 has been preserved in the Fugu, although the crown itself is now knurled rather than grooved- in my opinion a great upgrade, as knurling is low profile, has a tidy presentation and is unparalleled for good grip. The unusual location is kind of divisive among dive watch enthusiasts; for me, I love it! It prevents the crown from digging into the top of the wrist at all, and really sets this watch apart from any other diver. The crown is also signed with the Citizen Promaster logo. The decompression table is worn out, and until a Seiko AD squeezed the gasket last year it was working just fine. Probably still does.
