Inside every bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label is a velvety smooth and vibrant Scotch Whisky with layers of fruit, spice and smoky flavours. The Jonnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare series continues with this fourth installment, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich. As with the prior Ghost and Rare releases, this limited edition is blended with “irreplaceable ‘ghost whiskies’ from Scotch whisky distilleries that have long since closed.” The centerpiece of this one is Speyside’s Pittyvaich, which closed its doors in 1993. The Johnnie Walker Ghost and Rare series of special editions is made using irreplaceable ‘ghost’ whiskies and other rare expressions from the Johnnie Walker reserves used to create Johnnie Walker Blue Label.When compared with other Johnnie Walker blends, Ghost and Rare is not terribly elaborate in terms of the number of distilleries represented. In my opinion, this makes it all the more intriguing. Truth be told, I’ve never really been one to celebrate the marrying of malts and grains from dozens of distilleries into one bottle. When it comes to blends, less is often more–especially when “less” is of the highest quality. During my tasting (via a tasting kit), Ghost and Rare Port Ellen starts out closer to thetraditionalBlue Label, which is slightly smoky to begin with. It’s evident that the second expression is in keeping with the Blue Label DNA—just sweeter on the nose, reminiscent of vanilla. But as you progress a few sips further, you’ll begin to notice the distinct Port Ellen peatiness intensify (but not too much) on the palate. And the sweet roundness of vanilla bean highlighted by citrus notes will begin to emerge as well. Remember, though, that these flavors don’t show themselves until minutes after your first sip. It’s a Scotch that takes its time to unfold: Even its medium-light viscosity shows itself not during your first three sips, but a good while into the dram. This whisky also marks the first Ghost and Rare expression from Johnnie Walker master blender Dr Emma Walker, who took over from Dr Jim Beveridge OBE who retired earlier this year. Appearance: Burnished copper in color, this whisky displays irregular but well-formed legs, along with impressively attenuated beading, which is a surprising combination that I rarely encounter. Does that make Ghost and Rare look “spooky” in the glass? Well, er, sort of. . . but not off-putting, in the least. The exclusive Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Master Sets are a celebration of Port Dundas' legacy, the incredible craftsmanship of Johnnie Walker Master Blender Emma Walker and the Web3 cultural revolution.

Naturally, there’s a lot more than Port Dundas in this blend, so I’ll let the House of Wlaker tell you some more about it all: The vast majority of those casks are used for blended whiskies, with Johnnie Walker being the most globally distributed brand. Their Diageo portfolio sibling, Bell’s, is the biggest selling brand in the UK. This unparalleled access to these enormous reserves of whisky has given the Johnnie Walker brand the ability to reach the heights of their success and a great reputation for their premium blends.
