As usual I’ve rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a [0] if it’s standard or just average, and [-] if there’s a disadvantage.Sadly it lacks optical image stabilization and relies solely on the sensor based stabilization of Nikon’s full-frame Z-mount bodies. The over-exposure might come from such a faulty internal connection: the iris not closing, thus taking the photo full-open at f/5. enabling close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other objects that normally require the use of a specially designed macro lens.

This lens isn't a "constant" lens, in that as you increase the focal length, both the maximum and minimum aperture sizes decrease.Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. There are times when I miss having an A/M switch, focus limiter, and zoom locking switch – all features that you’ll find on competing zooms. That is, it might do fine for a sport like baseball, where the action frequently happens at certain well-defined locations (the bases), but would likely struggle with a sport with wide-ranging action like soccer or football.

I’ve been hoping for a Nikon Z 70-300mm variable aperture lens for ages, or, alternatively, for a Nikon Z 70-200mm f/4. Sigma has also decided to offer image stabilization in its 70-300mm range - we haven't tested this model yet. is the widest aperture available - a 1 stop difference - allowing 1/2 as much light to reach the sensor. Solid lines show performance in the sagittal (radial) direction while dotted lines indicate performance in the meridional (circumferential) direction.Performance isn't any better at 300mm; ƒ/8 and ƒ/11 are the best settings here, where they provide adequately sharp images. All three lenses in this comparison extend when zoomed to their longest focal length: The Tamron 70-300 extends to a maximum total length (incl. Minor quibbles: VC does not work nearly as well when panning moving subjects, the small switches are easy to accidentally flip, the lens is a bit heavy for its class, and there is no tripod ring. For its focal length, the lens works quite well in low light situations and the always difficult conditions of shooting after dark with only the stage lights for illumination. While there are a few standout bargains to be found, the lens world is much like the rest of life: There's no free lunch, you tend to get what you pay for.
