Murphy had started writing the lyrics while clubbing in New York City, [3] and knew the song was at heart a dance track, but the group wanted to record it in a different artistic fashion for its album version. Stevie Chick from NME wrote, " Róisín Murphy, it must be said, has a remarkable voice, a chalky, skewed howl which can twist into a purr, a cry or a sexy growl. Moloko's music has been described as alternative dance, [1] dance-pop, [1] experimental pop, [19] dance-punk [20] and electropop. The remixed version was eventually featured on over 100 compilations, and was later added on Moloko's third album, Things to Make and Do, after hitting the top ten on the UK Singles Chart.

Though the album was unsuccessful, reaching only number 64 in the UK Albums Chart, a Boris Dlugosch remix of " Sing It Back", the third single from the album that originally failed to reach the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart, was a huge hit, reaching number four in the UK chart and number one in the US Dance Chart. In 2002, Q Magazine ranked "Sing It Back" at number 905 in their list of the "1001 Best Songs Ever" [10] and in 2004, the magazine featured it in their "The 1010 Songs You Must Own". Moloko toured in support of the album, opening for Garbage in UK and Ireland in January and February 1999. The group signed to Echo Records and released their single "Where Is the What If the What Is in Why?

Brydon and Murphy ended their romantic relationship in 2002, just before they began work on the album. As a form of barter for the remix, Moloko vocalist Róisín Murphy later co-wrote and appeared on Dlugosch's " Never Enough" single, starring in the video for that release as well. Rolling Stone ranked the song at 152 in its 2022 list of the "200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time". Moloko were not satisfied with the Terry mix and had to convince their label Echo Records to put out the Dlugosch version instead. A

They started touring as a full band along with percussionist Paul Slowly, keyboardist Eddie Stevens, and guitarist Dave Cooke.The same year, Murphy and Brydon, along with long-time Moloko guitarist Cooke, briefly interrupted their hiatus to play a select number of acoustic radio performances. Since the band's disbandment, Murphy has performed several Moloko songs on her solo tours and live performances. In 2016, Moloko digitally reissued their remixes on the compilation All Back To the Mine, split into two volumes and comprising a total of 68 tracks. The song experienced chart success after it was remixed by DJ Boris Dlugosch, peaking at number four in the UK in September 1999.
