At first, I just thought this was the typical superhero story but as I read I found how different Invincible is from all the other superhero stories I've read. There were many twists and turns I NEVER saw coming, especially in Volume 3! He first takes the sobriquet of Kid Omni-Man and then Young Omni-Man as he attempts to rehabilitate the memory of Omni-Man in the general public.

Mark Grayson is a seemingly average teen that dreams of being a superhero. He's the son of the hero Omni-Man and he fears he'll never get his powers. One day he's at work and it finally happens... Conquest: An elderly, battle-scarred member of the Viltrum Empire. He is a psychopath who relishes in fighting and killing those who oppose the empire. Lord Argall: The former emperor of the Viltrumites prior to his death and the father of Omni-Man and grandfather of Invincible and Oliver Grayson. Robot: Former leader of the Teen Team and leader of the Guardians of the Globe until replaced by the Immortal. Not an actual robot, but a drone body controlled by a malformed human living in a life-support tank, he cloned a new human body for himself using Rex Splode's DNA with the help of the Mauler Twins. Afterward, Robot would become romantically involved with Monster Girl. In Issue #71, he and Monster Girl disappear into a Flaxan portal and return several issues later. Changed from the time he spent in the Flaxan dimension, he becomes an antagonist to Invincible and other heroes who oppose him. Mark Grayson is a normal high school senior with a normal part-time job whose father, Nolan Grayson, is the extraterrestrial of the planet Viltrum (with humanoid forms similar to Kryptonians) Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on the planet. At age seventeen, Mark begins to display superpowers, which come from his father being a member of the Viltrumite race, who, according to Nolan, pioneer the entire cosmos on a mission of benevolence and enlightenment. There were many times I found myself laughing out loud. Kirkman has a very fun way with how he writes. All of his characters were relatable, and there wasn't one issue I read that I didn't like, so kudos to you Rob!!

I really liked how even though Mark is a superhero with great strength, he does have an "everyman" kind of quality to him. Yes, he does save the world countless times, but he also has the same problems we all have. Invincible begins as your standard teenage superhero story. Invincible's dad is basically the Superman of this world. Mark's been waiting for the last few years to get his powers. When he does, it's the typical Spider-Man type story until the story twists on its heels around issue 10. Kirkman's focus is on character driven moments as Mark grows into being a superhero. That's what makes this series. Plus, Kirkman really knows how to drop those mind blowing cliffhangers. Those of you who have read The Walking Dead will know what I'm talking about. B. N.
