The final weird thing, for me, is the character design. Both Shun and Mio are in their 20s after the 3 year timeskip, but everyone is drawn with such extreme babyface that they look years younger. It's not funny or cute for Mio to kiss Shun's ex, and if he can get mad at Shun for it, then how does he not understand that it's cheating on his part, too? In the title I described harukaze no etranger as a family centered BL, because the focus is not only the relationship between Mio and Shun, but also the family relationships and the way they can be difficult when you add homosexuality, but not necessarily abusive and traumatic. The characters are endearing, relatable and so easy to fall in love with, making it a joy to celebrate their cheerful moments, as well as to feel with them through their hardships. Together the cast takes us on a journey that paints meaningful memories, both good and bad, that are then also softened by aspects that Just as in volume 1, however, I struggled with following the storyline. It felt like the story was all over the place and half the time I had no idea what was happening. I felt like the relationship between Shun and Mio is quite stunted. Granted their relationship in the first place is strange and almost forced.

Now I think this is one of the parts of this story that stands out the most. The story is mostly supported by our two main characters: lonely, pretty boy, Mio, and disinherited gay novelist, Shun. I'm gonna say this now, but Shun struggles with his homosexuality, something that's hard to find in many yaoi or shounen ai manga. Mio, on the other hand, is not gay and says a few times that he's into girls. But he ends up falling for Shun anyway because of who he is. I was really touched by their relationship, which didn't begin immediately. They're both a bit shy and Shun even seems a bit reluctant to be with Mio at first. But otherwise, these two characters and their interactions are touching, heartfelt, real, and endearing. Umibe no Étranger is Kii's debut work as a manga creator, and it ran in Shodensha's On Blue magazine in 2013. Kii launched a sequel manga titled Harukaze no Étranger ( L'étranger du zéphyr or The Stranger of the Spring Breeze) in On Blue in July 2014. Shodensha published the manga's third compiled book volume in July 2017. Seven Seas licensed the manga under the title Seaside Stranger, and it will debut the manga in English in July. Umibe no Etranger is a BL that does not fetishize gays. To those not that familiar with the genre this statement much not be telling much, but let me tell you that there’s just a few BLs that successfully don’t do that, even if they try not to. And most don’t even try at all. The characters feel like actual people having actual feelings instead of the usual “we’re all gay because the plot said so”. That’s not to say that Etranger doesn’t have any sexual content at all, but even that is more realistic and believable than the common “yamete kudasai senpai” bullshittery. Akiyo Ohashi ( Land of the Lustrous manga's 2013 promotional video, Sakura Capsule) directed the anime at Studio Hibari, and also served as scriptwriter and storyboarder. Kii, a former animator, supervised the film, and also designed the film's characters. Mayumi Watanabe was the chief animation director, while Takashi Hashimoto iwass the effects animation director. It feels like watching a digest of a series you have never seen. The characters are poorly introduced, it’s riddled with confusing cuts that seem to just skip over huge portions of would-be story, and has timeskips without warning that make it even more confusing. We are given no reason as to why should we care about the characters at all – unless of course you are a fujoshi, in which case the usual procedure would be to get hyped about boy’s love and disregard everything else, no further characterisation is required. Ultimately the story, or at least what I could catch from it, adds up to about an average shounen-ai plotline about dude liking a dude while some people are not fully okay with that. Nothing groundbreaking. I have not read the original work yet, so I don’t know if it too is as rushed as the movie, but guessing based on the fact that it is only one volume long, the adaptation probably didn’t left out much things.

There are a few nice scenes sprinkled in here and there, and I liked that there was a (totally underused) side lesbian couple. I thought it was interesting, too, that Shun's aunt took him and these other girls in, so she's obviously very cool with the LGBTQA+ community. That tiny supportive community reminded me a little bit of Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare, Vol. 1....which really just put this manga's issues in perspective and made me even less satisfied with it.

I just loved the characters so much that I read this all in one sitting. It was very enjoyable, short, yet left a good impression. En general ha sido una maravilla de continuación, desde el viaje a casa de Shun con pequeños escenarios de su memoria acudiendo a él, pasando por las pequeñas decisiones que deben tomar hasta el final que te deja con la boca abierta, deseando leer más. Mantiene ese toque dulce y tierno que te ablanda el corazón hasta el punto de emocionarte. On voit très peu, du fait que Shun est auteur c'est dommage. Mais j'imagine que cela se base surtout sur la ration famille/Shun donc c'est normal. Comme quand il a giflé Shun quand il croise son père après 7 ans d'absence. Il aurait simplement secoué ou du genre, pas besoins de le frapper. I went into this with high expectations, thinking it seemed like a promising Shounen Ai story that would actually focus on a realistic depiction of a intimate relationship between two fairly ordinary boys. My disappointment may have been partially the fault of my own high expectations, but nevertheless, "Umibe no Étranger" turned out to be a surprisingly frustrating read. I will try to give a good amount of objective criticism, but I will also be including subjective opinion in the "Enjoyment" section.
