Elizabeth leaves halfway through. She ends up crossing paths with Calvin, who is having a violent allergic reaction to Mrs. Donatti's (Valentina Garcia) French perfume. He vomits violently at Elizabeth's feet. She offers to drive him home. On the way, he apologizes for calling her a secretary. Trains and coaches leave for Hastings from several different stations across London – get the full lowdown to making this journey here. Recently regenerated, but originally built in 1872, this was once a music venue that sadly fell into disrepair following bad storms and fire. When all the scientists leave for the day, Elizabeth stays in the lab to do her own experiments. When she needs ribose and the lab is out of it, she goes to Calvin's lab and takes some. One morning Calvin comes running into the lab, sweaty and excited. He shuts the door without thinking and starts excitedly telling Elizabeth about a breakthrough idea. Elizabeth freezes. She asks him, with panic in her voice, to open the door. He keeps talking about his epiphany and doesn't seem to hear her. She rushes past him, flings open the door and leaves. She tells Calvin working together was a mistake and disappears down the hall.

Along the High Street and intersecting alleys are half-timbered houses and Georgian facades that conceal much older buildings.

Otherwise, bring your own bike and enjoy a massive ride as part of the National Cycle Trail 2, which actually runs through Hastings on its journey all along England’s south coast from Dover in Kent to St. Austell in Cornwall and is 361 miles long! Smuggling was rife in Hastings for hundreds of years, and the sandstone caves on West Hill were burrowed with hundreds of metres of tunnels to move and store contraband like rum.

There’s some beautiful old architecture on the seafront, like a Georgian crescent centred on St Mary in the Castle, a Neoclassical church turned into a performing arts space. I loved this premiere; it fully captured me to Elizabeth’s side, and I’m now fully worried about what will happen with her and Calvin’s research, if it continues at all. I worry that even a well-meaning man such as Calvin may not understand the extent of acclaim he’s willing to give up. Or that, even if he is fully supportive, something else is going to threaten Elizabeth’s happiness and success. I suppose we wouldn’t have this story if that weren’t the case.That activity continued up to the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when the town was gentrified as a resort. This makes Hastings a great affordable weekend or day trip – ideal for those seeking a bit of coast combined with countryside. Yes taking the funicular up above the town is an absolute Hastings classic, which sums up the kitsch charm of much of this seaside destination. And last but not least, if you come to Hastings, you simply can’t miss a side trip to the nearby town that gives this whole region its biggest claim to fame.

Bigger than Margate or Whitstable, but smaller than Brighton, Hastings is a perfectly-sized destination that boasts wide streets, large open spaces, several different areas and tons of stuff to enjoy there. The Crime Lab has games for wannabe forensic scientists, and there’s also a surround sound cinema with authentic recorded confessions by some of the most notorious serial killers. 14. Blue Reef Aquarium Source: facebook Blue Reef AquariumClose to the East Hill Cliff Railway, the Blue Reef Aquarium has hundreds of marine creatures like rays, sharks, seahorses and octopuses, as well as a Jungle Room with snakes and bearded dragons. From things to do in Hastings that require some physical energy, we now move to a rather more sedate activity, and that is visiting the wonderful Hastings Contemporary. These hold antiques shops, quirky one-off boutiques, historic inns, galleries, cafes and seafood restaurants.

The True Crime Museum has some chilling artefacts, like the actual tubs used by John George Haigh “The Acid Bath Murderer” to dissolve his victims, love letters from a serial killer, a genuine lethal injection table and paraphernalia connected to the infamous East End gangsters, the Krays. Amazingly not far from the centre of the town, this was originally a wooden tower built on top of a manmade mound. Situated behind the station, this is actually Hastings largest park space and is a delight for the whole family with playgrounds, cafes and some seriously beautiful trees.An amazing spot to enjoy the sun, the sand and the sea, this quiet corner is a peaceful retreat and finding this beautiful, chilled spot was certainly one of my favourite things to do in Hastings. He’s amazed by her cooking skills and scientific intelligence, and how the two mesh. Also worth a visit is Hastings’ Country Park, which is a lovely local nature reserve just out of the city to the east. Located up on the cliffs, it has stunning views of the expansive coastline below, which are magnificent on a clear day.
